Writer: Hayley CombaluzierHayley Combaluzier

On Saturday, February 14, impress your sweetheart with a unique and fun approach to Valentine’s Day! As part of its 4th TD Winter Jazz Festival (Feb. 6-8; Feb. 13-15), SmallShows in Sacred Spaces features Scott Helman, Jay Malinowski & the Deadcoast, Reuben and the Dark and the inimitable Martha Wainwright in their own unique shows throughout various smaller intimate spaces inside Dominion-Chalmers United Church. At 9:30pm inside the Sanctuary each artist will perform in a grand tribute to Canadian legend singer- songwriter Leonard Cohen’s 80th birthday! Tickets to the Leonard Cohen Tribute are $50. 5:45pm - For his birthday, a friend bought Scott Helman some time in a studio to record a couple of demos. The studio owner loved what he heard and offered Scott free time to record some more songs. Those demos led Scott to a performance in the offices at Warner Music Canada where he stunned all that were there with his voice. $25 6:30pm – Former Bedouin Soundclash lead singer/guitarist Jay Malinowski & the Deadcoast will perform a musical adventure featuring the story of Malinowski’s French Huguenot ancestor, Charles Martel who watched his mother beheaded in Lyon for her protestant convictions. $35 7pm - Calgary's Reuben and the Dark is a collection of five multi-instrumentalists and vocalists led by Reuben Bullock. The group makes chilling, emotive folk and soul driven by dark, introspective lyrics that explore the duality of misery and joy. $35 8:30pm - Martha Wainwright is a beguiling performer and a refreshingly different force in music. As the daughter of folk legends, Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III, music was a pivotal part of her childhood and adolescence and she often performed on stage with her parents and the entire McGarrigle family. $35 To complete your experience, join us at ARC The.Hotel for Late Night Jamming Feb 6, 7, 13 & 14 from 10:30pm - 1am.
