Minerva Navasca’s film "Desync" has been awarded Jury Prize and David Rendall’s film "Triage" has been voted Audience Favourite at this year’s Ottawa Canadian Film Festival with screenings on November 7-9 at the historic Bytowne Cinema in Ottawa. “Desync stood out as the top film from this year's program with its masterful use of sound, editing, and writing to explore the complex relationship between conflict and love in immigrant families." said Jury President Zach Chabot. "Minerva Navasca skillfully blends fiction and reality, allowing viewers to fully immerse themselves in the story. The Jury unanimously chose to award Desync with this year's Jury Prize.” Meanwhile, "Triage" drew praise from OCan co-founder Jith Paul: "Rendall took his characters on an emotional journey, constantly ‘ratcheting up the heat’ in the claustrophobic pressure-cooker they were forced to endure." The film is about “an arguing couple with a sick pet at the height of the pandemic." OCan returned to Bytowne Cinema for its eighth annual festival from November 7th to 9th, 2024. The festival was partly made possible by the City of Ottawa and Gallivan Wealth Management of RBC Dominion Securities' financial support. Local directors, Luca Fiore, Amir Zargara, and Hassib Hani, and Lisa Kockeritz, Kelly Saxberg, David Randall, Bobby Singh Brown, Kiarash Dadgar, Shelby Adams, and Stéphanie Gagné visited Ottawa to support their films and participate in Q&A sessions.  This was the largest group of filmmakers to ever attend the festival in person. This year's Jury President was Zachary Chabot, while jury members included Daniel Perras, Fitch Jean, and Nicole Bedford. Click below to see each winning movie's trailer!
