About the Event
The Day of the Dead Festival (Día de los Muertos) is a non-profit cultural event dedicated to promoting the richness of Mexican heritage through art, gastronomy, music, and dance, engaging visitors of all ages. Recognized as the largest Day of the Dead celebration in Canada, the festival is proudly celebrating its 10th anniversary. Held in the heart of Ottawa at ByWard Market, it offers the community an authentic opportunity to experience this captivating Mexican tradition.
As a free, family-friendly event, the festival features live music performances, traditional Mexican folk dancing, and diverse cultural expressions. Visitors can explore art exhibitions, an artisan market, and enjoy a gastronomic experience that includes food tasting workshops showcasing authentic cuisine. A lively procession with large characters brings the streets to life, creating a vibrant and immersive atmosphere. A central highlight of the celebration is the Altar Exhibition, where local artists create ofrendas dedicated to prominent Mexican and Canadian figures, honouring their lives and legacies while embracing the spirit of remembrance that defines the Day of the Dead.
