Parents! Grandparents! Aunts! Uncles! Anyone and everyone who wants to share stories with children! You know that stories matter! Here’s a workshop for you! Telling Tales for Children will inspire you to create your own stories for children in your life. There’s no doubt about it - storytelling enriches the bond between adults and children. Family stories build strong ties among the members of current and past generations. Imaginative stories can entertain a restless child in the car, enliven the walk to the school bus, and bring calm and comfort to the bedtime ritual. And stories are teaching tools to share life’s experiences and capture and expand young imaginations as no lecture can. But how do you tell a story if you never have tried it before? Or more intimidating, how do make up a story that will captivate little ones? What makes a great story? In this workshop, you will learn:

  • why storytelling is important;

  • the basic recipe for a good story;

  • tips and tricks for good storytelling;

  • how to discover and develop the potential of story ideas and resources you already have through Intuitive Storytelling; and

  • how Zack uses his techniques in one of his own stories.

The workshop will include hands on exercises to help you build your own stories.

Zack Loeks

is an organic farmer, educator, artist, writer, poet, and storyteller. He has  recently written and illustrated his first non-fiction book,

The Permaculture Market Garden

, which uses playful storytelling prose and watercolours to teach sustainable farm practices. Zack has written several short stories and is currently working on an adventure series for young adults. He spent much of his childhood listening to the works of great authors such as Dickens, Tolkien, and Conan Doyle on audio books, tuning his ear for characters and enhancing his gift of gab and wit to weave a good story. Zach has been telling stories for as long as he can remember, and now, with two avid story-listening young daughters, he makes up several stories each day. He has told over a dozen of his creations at public events to great applause, including two – “Bear Soup” and “How to Catch a Fly” - featured at the Ottawa StoryTellers’ 2016 Children’s Storytelling Festival. Zack employs Intuitive Flow Storytelling (IFS), which focuses on guiding principles for impromptu storytelling.
