Wakefield International Film Festival (WIFF) continues to offer the best in current documentary film this weekend, February 21 & 22:
Trick or Treaty? (2014)
Alanis Obomsawin's most recent feature documentary shines a light on the most important document in the history of Canada's First Nations: the infamous Treaty 9, a 1905 agreement in which First Nations communities supposedly relinquished sovereignty over their traditional lands — a precedent that is routinely invoked whenever governments are challenged about rights issues involving First Nations communities. Obomsawin interviews a string of legal, historical, and cultural experts — as well as people whose forebears were present when the treaty was signed more than a century ago — about the corrupt genesis of Treaty 9. The deeper that Obomsawin digs, the more disturbing the revelations. ALANIS OBOMSAWIN WILL ATTEND BOTH SCREENINGS
"... powerful, provocative, and important... Trick or Treaty? once again demonstrates why Obomsawin is one of our most vital cinematic voices." Toronto International Film Festival Guide.
Keep On Keepin' On (2014)
Legendary jazz trumpeter Clark Terry, famous for his work in the Duke Ellington orchestra, is a mentor to such greats as Miles Davis and Quincy Jones. And he continues to cultivate budding talents into his 90s. His latest, Justin Kauflin, is a blind piano prodigy with crippling stage fright. When Kauflin is invited to compete in an elite jazz competition, and Terry's health takes a turn for the worse, the two friends face the toughest challenges of their lives. "Magnificent!... Not just one of the year's best documentaries, it's one of the year's best pictures period." Pete Hammond, Movieline "As joyful as a jumping jazz riff..."
