Writer: Hayley CombaluzierHayley Combaluzier

Unison Ottawa 2014 is the fifth edition of a once-in-four-years Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans, Queer (LGBTQ) choral festival that will bring together choristers and other music artists from across Canada to the nation’s capital for the first time ever. Unison Ottawa 2014, under the leadership of Artistic Director Kurt Ala-Kantti, offers a showcase of the cross-country LGBTQ choral scene, and artistic and social networking to choruses within Canada’s LGBTQ communities. Local choirs In-Harmony A Woman’s Chorus, Choeur gai d’Ottawa Gay Men’s Chorus, and Tone Cluster - quite a queer choir are co-hosting the four-day festival at École secondaire publique De La Salle (501 Old St Patrick Street) Friday, May 16 to Monday, May 19, 2014. Nineteen choirs from across the country will be participating in five concerts over the May long weekend including choirs from Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver, among others. The closing ceremonies will feature three renowned guest conductors from the Ottawa region: Lisette Canton, Laurence Ewashko, and Robert Filion. With over 500 delegates, the fifth version of the Unison Festival will be the largest to date. The Festival promises to be an exciting musical event for Ottawa, and the perfect backdrop to present the LGBTQ community’s colours, pride and musical talents. A Festival pass is $75 with each individual concert priced at $20. Tickets can be purchased online at www.unisonfestivalunisson.ca or in-person at Wilde's, Leading Note, and the Ottawa Festivals office.
