undercurrents festival, presented by Ottawa Fringe, returns this winter from February 7-17. undercurrents 2024 will be presented bilingually in French and English. There will be French language productions with English captioning. “This year we’re asking you to jump in and experience different styles of theatre and space – we’re asking you to immerse yourself in theatre,” says Executive Director, Alain Richer. With 40 performances and events to enjoy, the festival has something for everyone! Whether you’re looking for work by up-and-coming local playwrights, you’re interested in how AI technology is integrated into theatre making, or want to walk the halls of a high school at night, undercurrents has lots to discover. Kimiko: Kicking off the festival on Wednesday, February 7th, there will be a return engagement from the sold-out 2023 Fringe show: Kimiko by Kaylie Hatashita. Kimiko is a poetic circus show that tells the tale of self-discovery and reconciling generational trauma. Le Concierge: Playing the entire first week of the festival at De La Salle Public High School is the Toronto immersive hit, Le Concierge created by Daniele Bartolini and Vincent Leblanc-Beaudoin. It follows the astonishing nightly journey of a janitor as he goes from classroom to classroom and through the hidden corners of a school. Terminally Ill: undercurrents fans will be thrilled to witness the official World Premiere of Terminally Ill, a complex yet funny play inspired by Dr. Melissa Yi’s award-winning medical mystery novel praised as “entertaining and insightful” by Publishers Weekly. Through My Lens: From Theatre Replacement in Vancouver, Through My Lens is a new intimate work by theatre artist Amy Amantea that combines conversation, hospitality and portraiture. Amy is an artist with a lived experience of blindness, specifically having a total of 2% vision in one eye. She is also a photographer with a practice that involves walking the city at twilight looking for interesting light patterns and capturing them with her camera. Blood Offering (Ottawa): In its world premiere by local playwright Vishesh Abeyratne. In the wake of yet another mass shooting in the United States, an American town is left reeling by the death of a student. Malunderstood (Montreal): Kenny Streule’s hit autobiographical comedy Malunderstood will be coming to Ottawa in a French translation com1missioned by undercurrents. Immerse yourself in a collection of memories that explain how Kenny was raised by a wild beaver. Using comedy, puppetry, and movement, Kenny examines his relationship with his Swiss German grandmother. I Don't Even Miss You:Closing out our mainstage lineup is I Don’t Even Miss You from the award-winning theatre company, Tiny Bear Jaws in Edmonton. In this dystopian pop “solo” show, a non-binary computer programmer wakes one morning to discover they are alone. A bold, multidisciplinary exploration of artificial intelligence, grief, love and legacy, "I Don't Even Miss You" asks how gender, identity, and family can exist with no one to perceive them. Make sure to add the three Discovery Series shows to your festival calendar, all taking place in the Atelier Theatre!KEEP MARS RED (Wakefield): In KEEP MARS RED, Sunà, the protagonist is intent on communicating with Mars in order to warn it of the impending doom if earthlings land there, especially earthlings like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson and others. L’hippocampe (Ottawa/Gatineau): In L’hippocampe (Ottawa/Gatineau) two dream researchers will try to illuminate through a panoply of tests using theatre, drawing, mechanical art and more. This French immersive piece is perfect for families, children aged 4 and over. Chasse au Trésor (Ottawa):Chasse au Trésor is a French play about a young man of Congolese descent newly arrived in Canada. His questioning of his personal identity spills over into his family relationships, his love life and the reality of being a young black man in North America.
