Thousands to be Transported Back in Time at 2014 Colonel By Night and Colonel By Day Celebrations!

The Council of Heritage Organizations in Ottawa is proud to present the second annual Colonel By Night, Sunday, August 3rd from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. in the heart of the ByWard Market; and the 19th Annual Colonel By Day Monday, August 4th from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. along the picturesque Rideau Canal entrance locks near the Bytown Museum (between Parliament Hill and the Fairmont Château Laurier). Over the August long weekend, heritage enthusiasts and visitors of all ages can travel back in time to celebrate Colonel By – the builder of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Rideau Canal, and of Bytown – now Ottawa, Canada’s Capital. “Together with our great partners Parks Canada, Musée Bytown Museum, the City of Ottawa and ByWard Market BIA, we’re making Ottawa’s heritage engaging and accessible with free activities for all ages,” says the Council of Heritage Organizations in Ottawa (CHOO l COPO) Executive Director Catherine Lindquist. The celebrations commence Sunday, August 3rd 3 - 7 p.m., with Colonel By Nightat William Square at York Street, north of the ByWard Market building. Fitting, as Colonel By laid out plans for the ByWard Market and Bytown, making him Ottawa’s first town planner! Ward Councillor Mathieu Fleury will provide welcome greetings and introduce an ‘edu-taining’ program, including: - Historical Costume Characters; and Horse & Carriage Rides from Cundell Stables - Unveiling of new ByWard Market Heritage Interpretive Panels - Historical chats and Q&A’s: - Ken Clavette, Workers History Museum: Workers of the Rideau Canal - Jean Yves Pelletier: French Canadians in Lowertown (ENG & FRE) - Heritage Eats Food Demo/Recipes: by Chef Luc, Patty Boland’s Irish Pub and Eatery - Walking tours: - Hagit Hadaya: ByWard Market: the Jewish Experience - Haunted Walks Ottawa ‘Time Travel Trail Adventure’ The free festivities continue for Colonel By Day, Monday, August 4th 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. along the Rideau Canal’s picturesque Ottawa Locks, including: - Opening Procession, with Mayor Jim Watson, Colonel and Lady By, Ottawa REDBLACKS Mascot Big Joe, Town Crier Daniel Richer, 78th Fraser Highlanders piper and drums - Watson’s Mill and Vintage Stock Theatre costumed characters - Performances: Heritage Hands Drum Club, Bytown Highland Dance and Aboriginal Experiences dances, Fair Trade wandering minstrel, Sens Unique and Maura Volante Interactive Traditional Music & Dancing - Children’s activities (Ottawa Art Gallery crafts, City of Ottawa Museums toys & games, Vintage Stock Theatre photo booth, tattoos, PastPort scavenger hunt) - Bytown Museum FREE Admission, print-making, heritage toys - Heritage demos (telegraph/morse code, blacksmithing, spinners & weavers, and more) - Parks Canada: Locks Changing, guided tours, historic tools, origami - CHOO-COPO Exhibitors Tent: a one stop tour of many of Ottawa’s heritage destinations and offerings Flapjack’s Pancake Shack, Sunny Days BBQ, Bytown Museum lemonade and ice cream will also have tr-eats for sale! From 2:00 – 2:45 p.m., the annual Celtic Cross Ceremony – recognizing the workers who died building the Rideau Canal and their families, will take place with Irish Ambassador Dr. Raymond Bassett and Ottawa & District Labour Council President Sean McKenny presiding.
