August 8, 2024 (Unceded and Unsurrendered Anishinaabeg Algonquin Territory, Ottawa) - Kicking off the Asinabka Festival’s gallery crawl and music showcase on August 10, 2024, Wolfbabe Collective’s debut exhibition marks the first time that films from the Indigenous Art Centre collection at Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) are screened as part of a show.   Wolfbabe Collective’s When is Future? When is Now? is presented by the 13th annual Asinabka Film & Media Arts Festival in partnership with Gallery 101 (G101) and the Indigenous Curatorial Collective (ICCA). A group of change-making Indigenous women and non-binary artists, Wolfbabes are all based in Ottawa:

  • Joi T. Arcand’s work is distinguished in the local art scene and her work has been shown in major galleries and exhibitions across Turtle Island and worldwide. She’s been shortlisted for the Sobey Art Award, and her previous roles include Director of SAW Gallery’s Nordic Lab.

  • Alexandra Kahsenni:io Nahwegahbow was an expert in the care and curation of Indigenous art as Associate Curator of Historical Indigenous Art at the National Gallery of Canada. She now holds a Faculty position at Carleton University, while continuing to curate, publish, and advise.

  • Danielle Printup, from nearby Kitigan Zibi, nurtured and developed emerging Indigenous artists and curators at Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG) before breaking ground as the first Indigenous Cultural Engagement Coordinator at CUAG.

  • Tanis Worme attended the Ottawa the School of Art and holds a degree in architectural studies from Carleton University. Tanis works as an artist while preparing for their Graduate studies in Architecture at the University of Toronto.

The vernissage for the exhibition, which creates distinctly Indigenous spaces for cosmologies as expressed through time-based works by Krista Belle Stewart, Melissa General, Tanya Lukin Linklater, and Theo Jean Cuthand, begins at 1 pm at G101 and includes a newly commissioned installation by Aylan Couchie. There will be a curatorial walkthrough at 2:30 pm.   The free art crawl continues at Arts Court at 4 pm with work by Claudia Minerva Medina in partnership with Digital Arts Resource Centre (DARC). Works by Gerald McMaster, Pōhaikealoha Panoke, and Miguel Sosme Campos will be exhibited at Arts Court before the Asinabka Live Music Showcase with beloved traditional singer Fawn Wood, hit singer-songwriter Logan Staats, Toronto punk group SLUG, and DJ Bryan Wolf Ear.   -30-   Please contact Amy Ede in advance to request further information or schedule interviews : (613) 294-1408 amy@amyede.ca
