RBC Bluesfest organizers in Ottawa today announced the launch of The Festival of Small Halls. This inaugural music series will feature performances in three unique Ontario venues: Crystal Palace on Colbourne Street in Perth, ON (August 7); Kinsmen Club of Gananoque, 400 Stone Street, North Gananoque, ON (August 8); and Bloomfield Town Hall, 289 Main Street, Bloomfield, ON (August 9).
Ottawa Bluesfest artistic director Mark Monahan will bring in renowned Canadian roots artist Chris Luedecke aka Old Man Luedecke to play in all three halls as a pilot project for an ongoing festival Bluesfest plans to stage in communities across Ontario, beginning next summer. “We felt Chris was an ideal fit to launch this project,” says Monahan. “He’s highly regarded across Canada and his music appeals to a wide demographic, young and old alike. It’s understandable why the says Old Man Luedecke is We brought him in for Bluesfest last year, and he put on an outstanding show.”Additional programming, along with Old Man Luedecke, includes: on August 7 in Perth, Henry Norwood; on August 8 in Gananoque, Tom Savage; and on August 9 in Bloomfield, Bill McBurney. The project is intended to replicate an annual festival that takes place on Prince Edward Island. Recently, Australian music promoters modeled their own version as a take off of PEI’s after visiting the island for a music conference, and other countries are planning to follow suit, including Scotland and Ireland. “The main focus of the project is to display small community halls in small towns and to bring great Canadian music to places that wouldn’t necessarily have it otherwise,” says project coordinator Kelly Symes.
