It's time to wrap up the Wakefield Grannies' 10th Anniversary celebrations. And so, November 2nd from 3 – 6pm at the Moulin Wakefield Mill Inn, do yourself a favour and come to the "." This event will be a fundraiser in partnership with La Maison des Collines hospice initiative, another organization spearheaded by the Grannies' founder, Norma Geggie.
The Grannies are thrilled with the eclectic mix of original art, fine jewellery and superb artifacts that will be on offer at this event. The extraordinary generosity of artists and supporters has been humbling. With the elegant Mill setting, along with delicious food and GREAT live music (including Luther Wright, Carol Goodman & Ken Walsh), this event is aiming to be a terrific way to spend an afternoon in aid of two very worthy causes – and maybe even get the jump on Christmas shopping. Admission is FREE!
2014 marks the 10th year since Norma, a motivated grandmother in Wakefield, started what has become a national grandmothers' movement in Canada, raising millions of dollars for their grandmother sisters in sub-Saharan Africa. That original group, the Wakefield Grannies, has been celebrating this particular anniversary with great enthusiasm as they continue to raise money for two groups of grandmothers raising their AIDS-orphaned grandchildren in South Africa. More and more of the grandchildren are finishing school, in part because of the Wakefield Grannies help and support – a remarkable achievement, given the intense poverty, the loss of a generation to the AIDS epidemic, and the African grandmothers' own illiteracy. There's a lot to celebrate, but the need is still great.
Funds raised at the , will help the Grannies to continue in their efforts to support the African Gogos and their grandchildren, and will also go toward the building fund for La Maison des Collines palliative care hospice. The group has acquired the land opposite the Wakefield hospital, so the race is on to build that hospice home.
Wakefield Grannies' "Fabulous Hand-in-Hand Sale and Auction" is November 2nd, 3 – 6pm at the Moulin Wakefield Mill Inn in Wakefield, QC. A small sampling of auction items is available for viewing at www.thegrannies.org. The event is free of charge, including refreshments. A cash bar will be available
