Announcing: teknosauna presented by the Embassy of Finland as part of Pique #21

Experience Finnish sauna culture with a twist. Sweat, cold plunge, then hit the dance floor with DJ Hulluella, a Sámi DJ, artist and producer from Finnish Arctic Circle known for her radiating high-energy performances.

Hulluella's eclectic selection honours music on a planetary scale, weaving percussive bass club, breaks, and techno seamlessly together in her signature mixed-bag style.  The wood-fire sauna will be hot from 6pm to 1am. Sauna, cold plunge, dance. repeat.

Bring your own bathing suit and towel. Changing area available on site

Teknosauna is co-presented by the Embassy of Finland as part of Pique #21 and Nuit Blanche Ottawa.

Across multiple floors of Arts Court, Pique #21 brings together an expansive mix of experimental music, contemporary club culture, live performance, immersive installation, kiki ballroom showcase and competition, and participatory art. The program spans electronic, noise, hip hop, hyperpop, ambient, contemporary classical, improvisation, and global club sounds, with artists drawing from Indigenous, Black, and queer cultural traditions.

On October 17 at FONO, Cairo electronic music fixture 3Phaz brings his experimental bass-driven take on Egyptian mahraganat/shaabi for an Ottawa debut live performance, supported by SUBR صبر, the deep-listening project of Lougien Dawoudiah and Pierre Richardson –– moving between experimental club and deep listening, deep bass and drone, finding each other in sonic experimentation.

Announcing: Mali Obomsawin + Main Arteries

FONO HiFi Lounge (473 Bronson Avenue)

On October 29, Abenaki multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer Mali Obomsawin comes to FONO for an Ottawa release show celebrating her new album, Automatic. Moving between experimental music and free jazz, Automaticis the result of Obomsawin’s exploration of Abenaki language ethnological recordings made in the mid-1900s, and her intention to reclaim the ancestral material from the outsiders who seized it. “Behind Automatic is a deep awareness about institutions’ predatory relationship with Native material,” Obomsawin explains. “I wanted to make a record that institutions couldn’t own.” (via Various Small Flames)

Opening the evening is Main Arteries, a new project from prolific local drum improvisers Olivier Fairfield and Scott Warren combining acoustic percussion, tape loops and synthetic textures.
