Help us PAINT THE TOWN TULIP this Fall to celebrate ‘A World of Tulips’ next spring at the 2018 Canadian Tulip Festival We’re delighted to announce that The Canadian Tulip Festival themed "A World of Tulips" will take place May 11 to May 21, 2018 and we want you to help us Paint the Town Tulip. Ottawa –Gatineau businesses, property and homeowners are invited to join the celebration by planting a tulip garden. The official tulip of the 2018 Canadian Tulip Festival is the World Friendship Tulip, a cream yellow Darwin Hybrid that grows to a height of 14 to 20' inches in full sun. School Friendship Tulip Garden Initiative The Canadian Tulip Festival, in collaboration with Vesey’s Bulbs, is also pleased to offer schools in the National Capital Region an opportunity to plant a special tulip garden as part of a new school tulip educational initiative. One hundred World Friendship Tulip Gardens comprising 50 bulbs are being gifted to local schools. Students will learn about planting and growing tulip bulbs as well as finding out the history of the tulip as a symbol of world friendship and peace and the history of the Canadian Tulip Festival which commemorates the historic Royal gift of tulips from the Dutch to Canadians as a symbol of international friendship and preserves the legacy of the liberation of Europe by Canadian troops and the birth of Dutch Princess Margriet in Ottawa during World War II—the only royal personage ever born in North America - paying tribute to our Canadian veterans and servicemen. Leslie McLeod, Principal of Briargreen Public School, whose Grade 5 students are participating in a commemorative planting ceremony at Commissioners Park applauds the Festival’s education initiative: “We are very excited to be a part of the Tulip Festival, especially as this year's theme reflects Canada's strong ties to countries around the world. This provides our students with an opportunity to learn about the role that the tulip has played in Canada's history and the important friendships that tulips have helped to foster. This opportunity will enhance our grade 5-6 Social Studies curriculum which looks at the role of government and Canada's connections to the world”. World Friendship Tulips are available for sale, via the Canadian Tulip Festival or Veseys while quantities last in packages of 12, 100, 250 or 500 and more.
