280 artists present new work to 20,000 people Between 6:20 PM on Saturday, September 20 and 4:21 AM the following day, art-lovers spread across Ottawa and Gatineau for the all-night art event Nuit Blanche. Over 20,000 people attended 80 projects by 280 artists in sporadic rain, demonstrating the region’s desire for accessible, contemporary art. The ByWard Market, Arts Court and downtown Gatineau were filled with revelers, while Wellington West received a steady stream of visitors. Galleries and businesses across both cities opened their doors to the exploring public. Nuit Blanche Ottawa+Gatineau is an opportunity for people to discover and for artists to experiment. “As we took in the event from across all participating zones, we were struck by how deeply we felt a sense of community between the people gathered. Every time we saw one of Christine Kim and Marcin Kedzior’s Paper Orbs adorning the neck or atop the head of an audience member, we saw how participating in the arts can empower individuals, initiate new conversation, and make people feel connected,” said Megan Smith, the festival’s Creative Director. For 2014, Nuit Blanche Ottawa+Gatineau introduced a number of changes and new programming, including two new commissions, more artist fees, increased time for artists to install their artworks onsite, more technical support and infrastructure on site, guided tours, and accessible bus shuttles. “Nuit Blanche is an ever-changing event. It shifts and morphs each year, seeking to adapt to a fluid urban environment, a diverse audience, and to expand the horizons of the local contemporary art scene,” said Dr. Smith. Nuit Blanche is an artist and volunteer-driven event supported by partners throughout the region. “The organizers thank all those who contributed their time, effort, and resources to make this event a success. Nuit Blanche depends on the hard work of many and every year we are blown away by the generosity of the artists, arts organizations, and businesses across Ottawa and Gatineau,” remarked Managing Director Ariane Nazroo. Nuit Blanche Ottawa+Gatineau 2015 will be held Saturday, September 19, 2015 from 6:19 PM - 4:20 AM. For more information visit nbog.ca.
