Cry Babies is a provocative collection of photographic and video portraits as well as Hobin’s first solo video project. Themes concerning sexuality, illness, racial stereotyping, religious exploitation and identity are contrasted and compared through a series of interchangeable photographic and video diptychs. By forming links from one childhood experience to another, Cry Babies aims to inspire compassion from the viewer and provoke questions concerning the authenticity of childhood as depicted in popular culture. Jonathan Hobin is an award winning and internationally noted photo-based artist from Canada. Hobin’s work draws from iconic literary, cinematic and historical references and popular culture to explore the darker aspects of childhood, storytelling and politics. Considered a controversial figure and “one of Canada’s most polarizing visual artists” (CBC’s Q), Hobin’s work is exhibited internationally and has been the subject of lectures at a number of prestigious institutions including the National Photography Museum of Finland and Oxford University. Features on Hobin’s work have appeared in major media including CNN, BBC, CBC as well as art publications including Art Das Kunstmagazin (Germany), Beaux Arts (France) and the Photographers Companion (China).
