"An economically competitive and sustainable region, building a capital for all Canadians” “Through its ability to plan on a long-term horizon, its commitment to innovation, the quality of its assets and the nature of its activities, the NCC brings a unique promise of value for Canada's capital,” said Dr. Mark Kristmanson, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the National Capital Commission (NCC), this morning at the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce’s “Eggs n’ Icons” breakfast. In his presentation, Dr. Kristmanson highlighted how the NCC is playing a major part in forging the promise of our capital, fostering the quality of life in the region and, as shown in surveys, most often exceeding visitors’ expectations, thanks to its:

  • planning role and expertise;

  • design and land use review process;

  • management of Gatineau Park that receives 2.7 million visits every year;

  • operation of the Rideau Canal Skateway that generates $160 million of economic activity in the region;

  • stewardship of the six Official Residences;

  • awarding of some 3,850 contracts last year for goods and services worth over $53 million;

  • varied real estate holdings in a portfolio of 600 commercial, residential and agricultural leases.

Dr. Kristmanson also mentioned a possible announcement about the re-development of LeBreton Flats. The presentation emphasized that the NCC would take a non-prescriptive approach and would look to the private sector to bring to bear its creativity and innovation to make this a landmark site in the capital. “Let us work together. Our success will rest on our promise of value as a local partner to create an economically competitive and sustainable region, while building a capital that is relevant and attractive to all Canadians” said Dr. Kristmanson.
