Māori Soul Act IA & Inuktitut Grandma Rap Video Premiere to open Asinabka Festival

August 1, 2024 (Unceded and Unsurrendered Anishinaabeg Algonquin Territory, Ottawa) - The Asinabka Film & Media Arts Festival opens its 13th year of showcasing contemporary Indigenous arts from August 6 to 11, 2024 with a night of entertainment under the stars at the Club SAW Outdoor Courtyard. The free event features a performance by visiting Māori musical guests IA, a screening of artist documentary Wilfred Buck, and the world premiere of Ottawa-filmed music video Tagvauvugut.   Showcasing the endangered art form of traditional Māori instruments, taonga pūoro, in collaboration with contemporary Indigenous soul, the duo of Moetu Smith and Reti Hedley (IA) visit Ottawa before playing the International First Peoples’ Festival in Montreal.   Jasmine Doig and grandmas Julie Ivalu and Koomook McClister, who star in the video and vocalize on the track Tagvauvugut, will join director Zoey Roy in attending the video’s premiere on Tuesday. An Inuktitut rap song by Obeatz (Omar Ballantyne) and co-written by Pitsulala Lyta, the song and video celebrate the past, present and future of Inuit pride and joy.   Please inquire about interviews with international visitors from Mexico and New Zealand:  

  • Clementina Campos Reyes and Miguel Sosme (Mexico), director and producer of the 2017 documentary portrait of Indigenous women weavers Tlakimilolli: Voces del Telar (Voices of the Loom) will attend the shorts presentation Beauty & Abundance on Wednesday, August 7 at 7:30 pm.

  • Curator of the Maori Pasifika Shorts program Leo Koziol (New Zealand) will speak at the screening on Friday, August 9, at 8:00 pm.

  The festival will screen over 60 Indigenous films from Canada and around the world and Indigenous artisans will sell their creations at the Arts Court Theatre venue. Other Indigenous artists confirmed to attend in support of their short films include Maya Skabar, Katy Rankin, and Jennifer Skabar (
