Writer: Hayley CombaluzierHayley Combaluzier

Ottawa (Thursday, June 13, 2024) – The Ottawa Jazz Festival is proud to curate a complete jazz experience. This means presenting artists that push the boundaries of creativity. These artists are the boldest innovators at their most raw, guiding music into new directions that will inevitably shape the future of all music..

The Azrieli Studio and Fourth Stage at the National Arts Centre will feature consummate world-class artists at the 44th Ottawa Jazz Festival (June 21 – June 30).  Performing in more intimate and personal stages, these are just some of the artists that will blow your mind this summer.

Born in London, England, SHABAKA will perform at the  Azrieli studio on June 22. The multi instrumentalist,  alongside his band, blends traditional flute melodies with several different cultural influences into a performance like no other. At points devolving into improvised hymns before building back into full scale band pieces, SHABAKA takes the listener on a musical journey across the globe.

Later that same evening, the Australian Art Orchestra, Hand To Earth performs on the NAC Fourth Stage. The Indigenous group took up residency in the isolated Tasmanian highlands. Daniel Yipininy Wilfred, a Yolŋu songman, and Sunny Kim, a Korean vocalist, effortlessly developed a rapport that transcends continents and cultures while expressing a fundamentally human bond. Their vocal styles are integrated with minimalist soundscapes which are created by trumpeter/composer Peter Knight, clarinetist Aviva Endean, and yidaki player David Yipininy Wilfred. Singing in his native tongue, Daniel is the custodian of Yolŋu Manikay (or songs) from South East Arnhem Land that date back more than 40,000 years. This is the world’s oldest music tradition that is still being practiced today.

The renowned Mats Gustafsson – THE END performs on the Fourth Stage on June 25 at 9pm. THE END is self described as a serious attempt to create new perspectives of contemporary experimental music – where elements of noise, melodies and layers of extreme energy can interact with the different backgrounds and experiences of the musicians. Their performance incorporates genres such as Free Jazz, Noise, Alternative Rock, Free Improvised Music, Contemporary Music, Opera, Scandinavian Folk, Grindcore, and Jazz in an explosion of energy.

Grammy nominated spoken word artist Aja Monetperforms at the Azrieli Studio on June 29. As a community organizer, surrealist blues poet and teacher, Aja moves between mediums, all elements influencing her writing. Audiences, however, can expect much more than just poetry as she is being accompanied by a full band featuring the immense talents of Ben Williams, Justin Brown, Logan Richardson, and Javier Santiago.
