Position Title: Board Member
Position Type: Volunteer 3-6 hours/month
Position Start Date: January 2016THE HOUSE OF PAINT FESTIVAL OF URBAN ARTS AND CULTURE is currently recruiting committed and dynamic individuals to join our Board of Directors. Board members provide strategic leadership and direction to confirm the House of PainT's mission. They approve the strategic plan, oversee and evaluate the plan’s success, assure financial health, provide fundraising leadership and enhance the organization’s public image. Members will serve as ambassadors for the House of PainT, creating opportunities and nurturing relations in support of its strategic objectives.
Some of the professional expertise currently sought for the House of PainT includes:
Fundraising and Sponsorship Development.
Finance and Accounting / Financial Oversight.
Human Resources (i.e: recruitment, management; labour code).
Health and Safety/WSIB.
Marketing/PR (including social media).
Community Development / Community Arts Programming.
In general, the following would also be beneficial in a Board candidate:
Prior experience on a non-profit Board or other related governance experience.
Familiarity with urban arts and Ottawa's urban arts community.
Readiness to support fundraising for the House of PainT with ideas, contacts and experience.
Experience in reviewing financial statements and budget forecasts.
English/French bilingual.
A passion for social justice, youth empowerment and a very high standard of personal ethics.
Strong communication and networking skills and success in working within a diverse team.
Effective e-communication and readiness to digest a substantial volume of documentation.
Attend monthly board meetings, AGM and additional pre-Festival meetings.
Attend at least one Festival event and/or one program event per year.
Stay informed about the organization and community.
Sit on one committee (i.e: Finance, Fundraising, Governance, Marketing & Communication, Festival Programming, Community Engagement, etc.).
Attend and contribute to fundraisers (i.e.: support with ticket sales, promotions, donations, etc.).
Assist the board in carrying out its fiduciary responsibilities such as reviewing the organization’s annual financial statements.
Contribute towards the creation of a collaborative working relationship amongst board members, staff and volunteers.
Contributing to the establishment of Ottawa’s largest urban arts festival and increasing the sustainability of urban arts culture in the Nation’s Capital.
Meeting and collaborating with others who are interested in urban arts and Ottawa culture.
Networking within the community and across industries.
Developing / practicing skills such as: leadership and strategic planning skills; team work; written and verbal communication skills; independent research skills, etc.
Free access to all House of PainT events.
This is a 2-year position with an average time commitment of 3-6 hours/month (more around Festival season).
Board members are expected to attend monthly meetings, which last on average 2 hours.
