Today marks GivingTuesday, a day for radical generosity.
Many of our members are non-profit organizations that do what they do out of a sense of purpose, rather than for financial gain.
If you'd like to extend your generosity to a local festival today, here are some ways you can do so.
Donate
Donations really do make a difference for local festivals, and are greatly appreciated. Many of our members rely on funding for crucial expenses. Every extra penny gives them a bit more breathing room, helping them plan and deliver amazing events.
Many festivals depend on volunteers to run effectively, and it's hard to overstate the value you can bring to a festival just by showing up to help out! Consider practicing generosity by donating your time to one of these organizations. You might be surprised at the difference you're able to make.
Newsletters aren't just good ways to discover deals and opportunities! A festival's newsletter is also an important way for the organization to communicate with the community. A social media post might get missed (or worse, locked in "algorithmic jail"), but a newsletter delivered to your inbox will help the organization know that they're communicating with someone who is interested in their news, and that the news is being received.
Share their events with friends and family
Speaking of information abundance, it's also easy to underestimate how helpful a simple share can be for a local event. As much as you might love a certain festival, there's a good chance that someone in your circle isn't aware of it yet. Maybe you can even ask someone you know if they'd like to plan to attend with you. (More on this in a moment!)
Follow them on social media
In addition to the newsletter option above, you can of course follow local festivals on the social media platforms of your choice. Not only will this help you stay up-to-date, but it will give you another means by which to share the festival with others!
Make a concrete plan to attend their events! (Pencil it into your calendar!)
And of course, the most direct way to support a festival is to attend the festival! The festival you'd like to support might not be happening
, but you can use today as a chance to take an action that ensures you'll be there when the date comes. Buy a ticket, or put the event into your calendar (with reminders to buy tickets when they become available!) You'll be supporting Ottawa's culture directly, and won't need to worry about missed dates or last-minute preparations! GivingTuesday provides us with an opportunity to support local festivals, but of course we can do any of the above on any day of the year! Let's start today, and then consider extending our generosity throughout the months to come.
