Chamberfest declares a Holiday Extravaganza under the theme “Let in the Light!”

Writer: Hayley CombaluzierHayley Combaluzier

Seasonal works celebrate the winter solstice across cultures in a programme narrated by Tom Allen. November 15, 2023 OTTAWA – As we approach the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, cultures around the world prepare to celebrate light. From the candles of Hanukkah and Lucia, the diyas of Diwali, even the secular twinkle lights of downtown Ottawa, we are all shining a light against the dark nights of winter. For their seasonal celebration, Ottawa Chamberfest is focusing on the light in times of darkness, with works drawn from classical and modern repertoire, woven together with the narrative assistance of host Tom Allen of CBC Radio.

  • We will feature winners of the Canada Council for the Arts Musical Instrument Bank with Vivaldi’s Concerto for 4 violins in B minor, played by past and present laureates of the program.

  • Local composer and conductor Dinuk Wijeratne will perform his own piano concerto, Gajaga Vannama. Based on a famous Sri Lankan folk and dance melody, this work celebrates the majesty of the elephant and its role in pageantry and ceremony.

  • We will celebrate the Festival of Lights with a nostalgic and klezmer-inflected Hanukkah Overture, by the Ottawa-raised composer Adam Shugar, featuring clarinetist Sean Rice.

  • We’ll also present Vaughan Williams’ famous rendition of the familiar melody of Greensleeves for flute, harp, and strings, and the pastoral Sinfonia from J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, featuring the rich sonority of oboe d’amores and English horns.

  • We will close our celebration with a selection from Norwegian composer Ola Gjelo’s Winter Songs collection, “The Rose,” perfectly evoking the spirit of winter.

This will be an evening of gorgeous music and splendid musicianship, all in the superb acoustic of Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre. Tickets are available online at chamberfest.com, by phone at 613-234-6306, or in person at 4 Florence St., Suite 201.
