Pride Month has become a pivotal month of festivities where both members of the community and allies can come together to celebrate love while also shining a light on the LGBTQ+ community and their causes. In Ottawa, this year is no different. Many sold out events have already taken place for the city to enjoy with more on the way to gear up for this year’s Capital Pride festival. A Pride Royalty Show featuring an exciting group of Drag Queens and current Royal Court and past Pageant winners took place June 3 with fantastic performances. Capital Pride is also getting ready to celebrate high school graduates on June 17 for a Pride Prom featuring live music and performances. June 22 will wrap up events for this month as Trey Anthony, Canadian creator, comedian and award-winning playwright will stop by for an in-person and virtual chat at the Ottawa Art Gallery about her new book Black Girl In Love (With Herself). Luckily for Ottawa, Pride celebrations won’t be ending this month as Capital Pride will be returning for their festival this August. Capital Pride, the annual Pride event in Ottawa, has been taking place since 1986. Events and activities will occur from August 21-28 and this year’s festival promises to feature a lineup of great events, free outdoor concerts, a street festival, and the annual Pride Parade. Shanice Pereira, the community engagement coordinator for Capital Pride, is looking forward to bringing some exciting new surprises to the city. “One of the really exciting things is that we're going to have three days of festival mainstage programming which we have not had before,” she said. From August 26-28, Capital Pride will have three stages. The Main Stage will hold larger concert-style performances with some musicians, bands and Drag performers. There will be a DJ Stage which will hold musical performances, where multiple genres will be showcased over the weekend. On the Community Stage is where you’ll find a variety of programming that Capital Pride will be releasing more details on very soon. “There’s a lot that’s going to be happening there for sure,” said Pereira.There are plenty of opportunities for youth and adults in Ottawa to celebrate Pride Month in June and beyond!
