(News Release: NECTAR Centre] The 12th Annual Ottawa Lumière Festival—presented each year by the New Edinburgh Community & Arts Centre (NECTAR)—is an evening of dazzling performers, magical lanterns, whimsical costumes and community spirit. Everyone is welcome—attendance is by donation. On Saturday, August 16, 2014, New Edinburgh’s Stanley Park will be transformed for the Lumière Evening of Light Celebration. A dazzling array of glowing paper lanterns will be hung from the trees and lining the park’s paths, beckoning you and your family inside. At 5 p.m. the Lumière lantern parade will begin at Crichton Street and the St. Patrick Street Bridge and wind its way along the river to Stanley Park. A second parade will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m. as darkness falls and the lanterns attain their peak of luminous beauty. Enchantment awaits Children and adults alike are encouraged to dress up and join in the experience—dragons, fairies, knights and wizards will be everywhere. And you just might win a prize! Artists and performers, including Shakespearean actors and fire dancers, will perform through the park. At 7pm A Company of Fools will perform As You Like It as part of their Torchlight Tour. There will also be special vendors offering delicious food and drink. Making ready, crafting light In the two weeks leading up to Lumière, NECTAR holds lantern-making workshops that are family-friendly and open to the public. Choose to build and decorate your own lantern, or help to create some of the large community lanterns that will charm visitors to the Lumière Festival.
