The Canadian Film Institute (CFI) and the Embassies of the Baltic and Nordic Nations in Ottawa, in partnership with Winterlude and Carleton University, are proud to present the 6th Bright Nights Baltic-Nordic Film Festival (BNFF). The festival begins on February 12th and runs until February 21st at Carleton University's River Building Theatre. Bright Nights features an eclectic mix of dark, edgy, and thought-provoking films from the eight Baltic-Nordic countries: Estonia, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden. All films are Ottawa premieres. "Our sixth annual celebration of the best of Baltic and Nordic cinema features all Ottawa premieres of recent and acclaimed films from eight countries. Three of the films in the Festival come to us from the celebrated Cannes Film Festival (RAMS, LOUDER THAN BOMBS, and INGRID BERGMAN: IN HER OWN WORDS). We are very proud of the strength and diversity in this year's selection, and we're also honoured to have Estonian filmmaker Helga Merits attend the screenings of her films during the festival," says CFI Executive Director, Tom McSorley. The BNFF kicks off with a screening of Denmark's THE SHOOTER, a stylish thriller of vigilante justice fuelled by an urgent and contemporary issue: climate change. It plays on Friday February 12th at 7:00PM. Special guest filmmaker Helga Merits from Estonia will be in Ottawa to present her work (THE STORY OF BALTIC UNIVERSITY/CLASS OF 1943) on Sunday February 14th at 4:00PM. All screenings take place at the River Building Theatre located at Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Dr. Admission is $13 for the general public and $9 for CFI members and seniors. A full festival pass is $40. Access to the event is free to all Carleton University students and staff. Tickets and passes are available on the official website at CFI-ICF.CA/BRIGHTNIGHTS or can be purchased at the door one half hour before screening time.
