Canada’s 3-time JUNO award-winning, multi-platinum album international recording artist and the prestigious Ella Fitzgerald Award recipient Holly Cole is performing on Jan 29 at 8:30pm. “She exudes as much fun as feeling in concert treating the people to a rare performance that was musically rewarding and refreshingly intimate.” – Calgary Herald. Jazz fans may think it just doesn’t seem right to regard pianist and composer Marc Copland as an elder statesman but at 73 years of age, he has been spinning out sounds like no other pianist since the mid-1970’s. He’s considered a “triple threat”: a player with a lyrical sense of touch, unique innovative harmonies, and a deep sense of swing. “Copland is a genius...he creates the loveliest of sounds.” – Dan McClenaghan, allaboutjazz.com. Marc Copland will also perform in the Roddy Ellias Free Spirit Ensemble featuring Kellylee Evans on Saturday, Feb 5 @ 5pm at Arts Court Theatre. Jessica Moss has been flourishing as a solo artist since the release of her acclaimed debut album Pools Of Light in spring 2017. The violinist, composer and singer best known for her fifteen-year tenure in political post-punk band Thee Silver Mt. Zion has been captivating audiences with gritty, warmly expressive electronic-and drone-inflected post-classical Minimalism (and sometimes Maximalism), accented by a distinctive melodic sensibility that channels Klezmer, Balkan and Middle Eastern tropes. Montreal’s award-winning singer-songwriter Dominique Fils-Aimé presents Three Little Words, the final chapter in her album trilogy that delves into the legacy of African American music. From the stripped-down blues tones on her debut album, to the jazz inflections of her second opus, the latest recording (released in February 2021) embraces the emotional lushness of soul music. On stage, whether in Canada, Europe or the United States, Dominique Fils-Aimé draws us in with her vocal swagger and radiant glow. Ottawa jazz pianist Peter Hum has been a mainstay on the music scene of Canada's capital for three decades. Peter Hum’s Ordinary Heroes strives to make original music that uplifts listeners with forthright lyricism, strong evocations of moods, and energetic, unfettered improvising. Peter has been a full-time journalist with the Ottawa Citizen since 1990. Taking their name from the word for heart or soul in the Afro-Cuban religion of Santeria, Juno-Award winning OKAN fuses Afro-Cuban roots with jazz, folk and global rhythms in songs about immigration, courage and love.Esprial debuted at the number one position on the !Earshot International charts and was included in CBC Music's top 20 and NPR's top 10 Alt Latino's albums of the year. François Bourassa—now with ten albums of original music under his belt —has become an ambassador for Canada’s thriving jazz community at an international level. A paragon of consistency and evolution and inspired by a diversity of sources, his award-winning eponymous quartet has been a staple of Montreal’s artistic landscape for more than 25 years. Leanne Betasamosake Simpson is a renowned Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg musician, author, academic and one of the most compelling Indigenous voices of her generation. Her latest record, Theory of Ice (You’ve Changed Records) was short-listed for the Polaris Music Prize, and she is the 2021 recipient of the Prism Prize, Willie Dunn Award. Guitarist Roddy Ellias’ music has been described as “unapologetically beautiful” (All About Jazz) and his creativity “both startling and inspiring” (Just Jazz Guitar). A passionate improviser, Canadian jazz guitarist and composer Roddy Ellias is an artist whose work defies simple definition. His musical journey has taken him from his early roots in pop and R&B bands and classical music, to the improvised world of jazz, through African and other world beats all the way to writing an opera, and everything in between. Fresh from a brand new recording of nine original songs, featuring Juno award-winning vocalist Kellylee Evans, pianist Marc Copland, Ottawa Jazz Programming Manager Petr Cancura and six close musical friends bring these songs before a live audience for the first time. TuBari came together by the love and admiration for the late Howard Johnson shared by saxophonist Erik Lawrence and tuba player Keith Hartshorn-Walton, along with the very expressive and creative drummer Bram Kincheloe. Their union having been delayed by the pandemic, this performance will mark their first appearance together in person as a trio. They draw their inspiration from music influenced by soulful jazz and rock classics, original compositions, as well as wild jams and beautiful lyricism that will surprise expectations. After years of touring together, decorated Canadian artists Elizabeth Shepherd (vocals, piano) & Michael Occhipinti (guitar) have teamed up to create ES:MO - a musical duo focused on genreless creativity and exploration. With extensive musical backgrounds, international acclaim, and a lengthy list of prestigious awards and nominations, namely, their combined fifteen Juno nominations, both artists have had successful, independent careers before embarking on their new venture.
