THE FILMS OF LEI LEI
Watch the Chinese visionary weave a vision of hope for the modern world in his special #OIAF19 Retrospective.
(Still from Lei Lei's BIG HANDS OH BIG HANDS, LET IT BE BIGGER AND BIGGER) LOVE IS STRONGER THAN WITCHCRAFT Whether it’s a planet being invaded by aliens (Pear or Alien), a delayed mahjong game during an apocalypse, a city of regimented rubric’s cube heads and ping pong players (Magic Cube and Ping Pong), anonymous tourist photos (Recycled), his father’s old book designs (Books on Books) or a city where everyone has big hands (Big hands oh big hands, let it be bigger and bigger), Chinese animator, artist and musician, Lei Lei, creates (or recreates in Recycled and Hand Coloured #2) environments that often fuse magic realism, science-fiction, comic books and video games into visually delicious, handmade, candy coloured worlds that are naïve, hopeful, nostalgic and occasionally silly in the belief that love can liberate us all. Throughout his work, Lei Lei lovingly celebrates the marginalzed, misunderstood and forgotten, resuscitating them with a new air of hope, purpose and humanity. Chris Robinson, Artistic Director of the OIAF . “CHINA’S RISING INDIE STAR” - ANIMATION WORLD NETWORK “Lei Lei is famous, at least by Chinese independent animation standards. Since graduating from Beijing’s Tsinghua University in 2009, he has forged a brand with a steady stream of short films in his distinctive, bold, graphical style. His shrewd appreciation of the importance of traveling, speaking English and networking with his foreign peers, has seen the 28-year old filmmaker give TED talks, gain commercial clients, prominent international fans and 40,000 Weibo (Chinese Twitter) followers. His 2013 film Recycled, a collaboration with artist Thomas Sauvin, blew expectations apart, won accolades at leading festivals and propelled him onto a whole new plane of filmmaking.” - Chris Colman, AWN. IN HIS OWN WORDS Get a glimpse of Lei Lei’s earnest love of animation in this TedTalk from Beijing, 2012. Then, come see what the internationally acclaimed animator has dreamt up at #OIAF19.
