The Capital bursting with fall colours

New this Fall Rhapsody: Downtown Gatineau shuttle route and Epicurean Dining Tour in OttawaCanada’s Capital Region¾Over the next few weeks, the fall foliage will brighten the Capital Region’s parks, pathways and shorelines with a spectacular display of colours—making this the perfect time to explore Gatineau Park and the Greenbelt. Free shuttles from downtown Gatineau (NEW) and Camp Fortune Hop on a free shuttle that makes it easy to access Gatineau Park’s scenic lookouts, Pink Lake and the Mackenzie King Estate! Departing from downtown Gatineau and Camp Fortune, the shuttles will run for the three weekends of Fall Rhapsody: October 1 and 2; October 8, 9 and 10; and October 15, and 16, 2016. NEW—Shuttle to Pink Lake and Mackenzie King Estate from downtown Gatineau From 9 am to 2 pm, the downtown Gatineau shuttle will leave every 20 minutes from the Centre Robert-Guertin park-and-ride, Terrasses de la Chaudière (OC Transpo), Montcalm Station (Rapibus) and the welcome area (Gatineau Parkway), and will make two stops along the way: Pink Lake and the Mackenzie King Estate. Shuttle to lookouts from Camp Fortune From 11 am to 3 pm, the Camp Fortune shuttle will run every 10 minutes, departing from Camp Fortune, and will make four stops along the way: Keogan Shelter, Étienne-Brȗlé Lookout, Champlain Lookout and Huron Lookout. During this time, the southbound lane of Fortune Lake Parkway (heading toward Champlain Lookout) will be closed to all regular traffic (including bicycles) and open exclusively to the Fall Rhapsody shuttle. The shuttle service is a pilot project offered in collaboration with Camp Fortune and Société de transport de l’Outaouais. NEW—Epicurean Dining Tour in Ottawa The Epicurean Dining Tour blends the best Greenbelt farmers have to offer with the culinary expertise of NCC tenant restauranteurs in the ByWard Market. On Fall Rhapsody Saturdays (October 1, 8 and 15, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm), the public can enjoy a unique farm-to-table experience with each stop on the tour featuring a creative dish prepared with fresh ingredients from Greenbelt farms. Spaces are limited. Visit the Ottawa Tasting Tour website to purchase tickets. Fall Rhapsody Special Events Fall Rhapsody will celebrate the magnificent display of colours with a varied program of family activities in partnership with local communities, over the three weekends, from October 1 to October 16. WEEKEND 1: Sounds of the Fall, October 1, noon to 4 pm at the Mackenzie King Estate and 10 am to 5:30 pm at Maison Charron, in Jacques-Cartier Park

  • Shows and presentations from local authors and musicians, including performances from members of the Orchestre symphonique de Gatineau at the Mackenzie King Estate.

Activities organized by the Association des auteurs et auteures de l’Outaouais, in collaboration with the NCC.

WEEKEND 1: Folk Picnic and Kites

  • Traditional folk music by Jam Trad of Outaouais

  • Kite-making workshop and flying demonstrations

  • Exhibit of old kites

  • Guided walk to Baldwin Cemetery

  • Community picnic

Activities organized by the Municipality of Chelsea and the Gatineau Valley Historical Society, in partnership with the NCC. Weekend 2: Pontiac Country Fair

  • Merchant and craft kiosks

  • Nature interpretation near the Luskville Falls Trail

  • Demonstrations and obstacle courses with horses

Activities organized in collaboration with the Municipality of Pontiac. Weekend 3: Nature Days

  • Demonstrations with small mammals and with birds of prey

  • Guided hikes with nature interpreters

  • Self-guided tour of Lusk Cave

The Greenbelt Canada’s Capital Greenbelt offers spectacular views of the fall landscape, along with 150 kilometres of trails. Trails at Shirleys Bay (7 km), Stony Swamp (40 km), Pine Grove (18 km) and Green’s Creek (6 km) are ideal for hiking. In addition, Mer Bleue, one of the most studied bogs in the world, offers 20 kilometres of hiking trails and boardwalks to admire the vivid fall colours.
