As we near the end of the month of March, we can finally hope that the snow will melt away for good this year. As symbolic as the warmer weather is for our transition into the next season, so too are festivals in Ottawa that will take place from the end of March until the beginning of April.
These festivals highlight the passion of filmmaking and the fascination of geek culture. Here are the events to look forward to and why you should check them out as we say goodbye to winter.
March 31 – April 2
St. Patrick’s Day celebrations don’t have to end just yet as the Irish festivities continue with the Irish Film Festival. It features contemporary and classic Irish films from Ireland and by Irish-born filmmakers.
You should check out this festival because of the powerful and emotional films it will feature based on Irish culture. From stirring dramas to thought-provoking documentaries, they will treat you to a nice variety of filmmaking art pieces from the Gaelic motherland. Of course, there will be food and drink available; specialties of Ireland.
This great event will take place at the Arts Court Theatre in downtown Ottawa.
March 31 – April 2
The Ottawa Geek Market is your capital geek festival! It is a celebration of Ottawa’s growing geek community and will feature shopping, activities and sci-fi, fantasy, anime, gaming, horror, and steampunk and comic book costume play.
They have three goals in mind: to provide local geeky artisans, vendors and shopkeepers with an opportunity to sell their awesome items; to celebrate the thriving geeky community in Ottawa in a fun and safe environment; and to donate as much money as we can to local charities.
You should check out this festival because it’s got something for everyone. No matter what you’re into, we have something for everyone: kids and adults alike. There are plenty of activities and sights to see, including:
Over 100 vendors to shop from
Board gaming area and escape room
Geek Quest Scavenger Hunt
Huge LEGO display & play area
Costume contest and free photoshoot
This event is in proud in support of some of Ottawa’s best geeky community groups, and the festival will be donating $750 each to the following clubs:
The Barony of Skraeling Althing (Society for Creative Anachronism)
Join them this spring as they celebrate the fantastic work they do and provide some financial assistance to help them continue to bring geeky joy to the region. The event will take place at the Nepean Sportsplex.
