Precautionary Principle: the Nicole Bruinsma Story film debut at Camp Fortune

Writer: Hayley CombaluzierHayley Combaluzier

ACRE (Action Chelsea for Respect of the Environment) and Commerce Chelsea Commerce are co-presenting the premiere of Rooney Productions' latest film, Precautionary Principle: the Nicole Bruinsma Story, on Monday, November 18th, at 7:30pm at Camp Fortune in Chelsea, QC. The event will be a fundraiser to aid the distribution of the film. It will be introduced by Dr Bruinsma's husband, scientist Scott Findlay, and will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers and a reception. Precautionary Principle: the Nicole Bruinsma Story tells the story of a small town Québec family doctor, Nicole Bruinsma, and the pivotal role she plays in galvanizing community support and effecting a municipal ban on the cosmetic use of pesticides. Nicole is a charismatic and brilliant woman, a scientist, a dedicated wife and mother. When she is diagnosed with breast cancer and has none of the usual risk factors in her heredity or lifestyle, she investigates other possibilities and becomes convinced chemical environmental hazards have played a role in her illness. The film follows Nicole as she battles on two fronts: pushing to have protective environmental legislation in her community and country, and fighting her own devastating illness. Sadly, she only wins one of these battles. Precautionary Principle: the Nicole Bruinsma Story is a story of what one person can do - with the ultimate message that we all need to take action for our environment. The premiere of the film at Camp Fortune is important and appropriate for two reasons. First, Chelsea was Dr Bruinsma's home town and the municipality where the drive to ban the cosmetic use of pesticides took place, and second, Camp Fortune was the venue where she and a few other like-minded individuals first inspired their community to action. The organization ACRE - one of the co-presenters of the premiere - was born, in part, as a result of that original event. Camp Fortune is located at 300 chemin Dunlop, in Chelsea, approximately 15 minutes from downtown Ottawa. The premiere of Precautionary Principle: the Nicole Bruinsma Story will take place Monday, November 18th at 7:30pm. Doors will open at 7pm. Admission to the event is $10 and the co-presenters will be seeking further donations to fund the distribution of the film.
