Mar. 28, 2013 - OTTAWA, ON  | MERZ is a show that incites reaction. Peter Froehlich’s one-man-play is inspired by the provocative and funny little performances Kurt Schwitters gave in Germany in the years leading up to the Third Reich. History remembers Schwitters as a visual artist, perhaps best known as the originator of collage as an art form. This performance allows a rare opportunity to experience his hilarious, iconic and theatrically challenging poems and stories. “One of the funniest shows I have seen in a long time...the presentation overflows with polish and command.” - Montreal Gazette The performance will take place April 3, 4 and 5 at 7:30 PM and is a fundraiser for Great Canadian Theatre Company Capital Campaign Building Fund. Tickets at $25. Kurt Schwitters’ one-man movement, MERZ, is based on the notion that a culture reveals itself in what it throws away. His visual and poetic work was created from bits and fragments of material and language. Peter Froehlich’s play MERZ premiered in 1975 on the Fringe of the Edinburgh Festival. It opened to an audience of three and closed to standing room only. Froehlich has toured MERZ to theatres, galleries, jazz clubs and concert halls across Canada, the US, Peru and Transylvania. In 2007, Froechlich received a Rideau Award for best male performance of the season for MERZ. “A theatrical delight, often hilarious for its absurd effects, always fascinating for its virtuoso acting technique.” - Scene Changes, Toronto For more information on Schwitters, Froehlich and GCTC see attached media kit.
