Friday Night Fights

GCTC’s Artistic Director, Eric Coates, unveils two debate series like no others for the 2013-14 season - Friday Night Fights and Fearless WomenFriday Night Fights The first is a lively debate series presented by GCTC and The Hill Times/Embassy.Friday Night Fights bring opposing views to bear on themes from GCTC’s season. Moderated by The Hill Times Editor-in-Chief, Jim Creskey, the debates will give GCTC's audience a chance to mix it up with some celebrity debaters after the performance.  Guest debaters will square off over issues raised by each production in the GCTC season. The action will provide the audience with something much more satisfying than typical partisan badgering. “Why a debate? Debate is at the core of critical thinking and it keeps us engaged with each other by offering a meaningful exchange.” Eric Coates says “I’m tired of partisan sound bytes. It’s criminal that we allow important conversations about our society to play out in 140 letters." The first debate pits the Ottawa Sun’s National Bureau Chief, David Akin, against political cartoonist Michael de Adder. Mr. de Adder will defend his right to parody the Prime Minister’s Office, while Mr. Akin provides the conservative media’s counterpoint. The debates take place in GCTC’s lobby after the evening performance on the first Friday of each production. Admission is free.
