Who can ever forget the clasp of hands to the mouth, the ecstatic delight in the eyes and the donning of the white Stetson that forever etched in people’s hearts a magic moment and silver medal in Canadian sports history? Liz Manley triumphed mightily over adversity that Olympic day in 1988. And she has not stopped. Liz is using this same fighting spirit and gift of skating to bring Ottawa and area some of the best skaters in the world to perform: Elvis Stojko, 2-time Olympic silver medalist, 3-time World Champion, Canada’s King 7-times running Javier Fernandez, European and Spanish Champion, 2-time World Bronze Medalist Kimmie Meissner, 2006 World Champion Violetta Afanasieva and Pete Dack, 2006 World Extreme Champions Shawn Sawyer, Canadian and Skate America Silver Medalist, World and Olympic Competitor …and many more And interwoven in this amazing skating spectacle will be the music of Alan Frew of Glass Tiger. In addition to being a 5-time Juno Award winner and having toured with some of the world’s greatest music legends, Alan wrote the 2010 Olympic Broadcast Theme “I Believe” and is a successful author and a sought-after speaker. Alan remains one of Canada’s most beloved entertainers. February 13: day one of the 2-day fundraiser features a Gala Dinner at the Brookstreet Hotel including fireside chats with Olympic Champions, an acoustic performance by Alan Frew, and a live & silent auction. February 14: day two of the 2-day fundraiser is Valentine’s Day and what better way to treat your loved one than to take them to the hugely popular ice show Liz Manley is becoming so well-known for? TD Place will play host to this skating extravaganza, featuring some of the world’s top figure skaters, extreme skaters, aerial acts and live music. A portion of proceeds will go to the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa, and D.I.F.D. courtesy of The Ottawa Senators Foundation. The Foundation has partnered with D.I.F.D. in an effort to inspire conversations and educate fans on the topic of youth mental health while raising funds. Being able to put on the Gala Dinner and Ice Show for others means more than winning medals for Liz. “Faced with adversity, my competitive spirit pushed me to take action…talk therapy provided me with the necessary tools to overcome my depression. With bullying, teen suicide and mental health issues on the rise, please join me, my friends, and Accora Village, BDO and TD to provide support for these two worthy charities. It means so much to them, and I am grateful that we can do this for them.” For sponsorship opportunities contact Brent Theobald at 613-219-0633 or at info@elizabethmanleyandfriends.com.
