Blood on the Moon, final show in #Fringe20 SeriesMay 17, 2017 — Ottawa Fringe presents the eighth and final presentation in its commemorative #Fringe20 Series that reprised eight hit shows from past Ottawa Fringes in celebration of the festival’s 20th anniversary. When: May 25, 26 & 27, 7:30 pm Where: Arts Court Theatre, 2 Daly Avenue What: Blood on the MoonWho: Pierre Brault and Ottawa Fringe Why: To celebrate 20 years of Fringe in Ottawa! Pierre Brault returns with his award-winning, critically acclaimed drama that explores the murder of Thomas D’Arcy McGee, and the accused James Patrick Whelan, laying bare the Irish passion for the homeland, and the sacrifices made in its name. The evidence against Whelan was purely circumstantial, yet led him to his death before thousands of jeering spectators in what would become Canada’s last public hanging. Some 135 years later, Whelan’s ghost still haunts the streets of Ottawa, determined to prove his innocence and rewrite the history books. Brault re-examines the trial and presents the audience with a decision to make, did he or didn’t he? Blood on the Moon premiered at the 1999 Ottawa Fringe Festival in the Arts Court Theatre at 2 Daly Avenue. This building was once the Ottawa Courthouse and the actual site of the historical trial of James Patrick Whelan. It is immediately adjacent to the Carleton County Gaol, now the Ottawa International Youth Hostel, where Whelan was incarcerated and hanged. “Blood on the Moon was the first hit to come from the Ottawa Fringe – and arguably the biggest” says Patrick Gauthier, Festival Director. “So bringing it back to close our Fringe20 series was a no-brainer. With the 2017 festival just three weeks away, this encore run of Blood on the Moon is a perfect appetizer before your annual Fringe binge!” Find the complete show description and tickets at ottawafringe.com/fringe20.
