The TD Ottawa Jazz Festival’s popular annual benefit concert returns for an 18th year to Library and Archives Canada November 19 for an evening of music and fun, highlighted by the rousing, emotional music of Toronto singer-songwriter Basia Bulat. The event will also feature a live auction with a variety of exciting items up for bid including exclusive memorabilia from past Festival headliners, travel, adventure and spa packages, excursions, concert tickets and much more. Bulat has been one of the brightest lights in the contemporary indie folk scene since her acclaimed debut Oh, My Darling was short listed for the prestigious Polaris Prize. Instantly identifiable thanks to her voice, a complexly-shaded instrument that lends real emotional stakes to her delicate, moody songwriting, Bulat has worked with some of Canada’s finest musicians, including Colin Stetson, Daniel Lanois and members of Arcade Fire. Recent years have brought more honours (including a second Polaris nomination), and she has become a sought-after mainstay of the Canadian festival circuit. As a non-profit organization that has served the community for over 35 years, the Jazz Festival relies on private donations in order to bring some of the world’s biggest jazz and popular music to the city, including acts like Branford Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Aretha Franklin, Return to Forever, Christian McBride and David Byrne & St. Vincent, as well as unique for connoisseurs such as 2015’s Spotlight on Euro Jazz series. The road to the 2016 Festival begins here. For more information on the Benefit Concert or the Festival as a whole, please visit ottawajazzfestival.com.
