Bruce Sinclair is probably going to ask you to square dance. In his storytelling show One Métis Man's Life Growing Up in Saskatchewan, which takes place on Thursday, October 24 at Arts Court Theatre (2 Daly Ave.) , the professional storyteller and theatre artist will transport audiences back in time to small town Northern Saskatchewan. And that includes local delights such as square dancing! Don’t worry - learning the moves and experiencing missteps is all part of the experience. Sinclair’s show kicks off Ottawa StoryTellers’ 2019-2020 Signature Series. Now in its 19th season, it is the only professional storytelling series of its kind in the city. This season’s Signature Series offers six diverse storytellers from Ottawa, Canada, and beyond. Audiences will hear stories that range from the personal and autobiographical, to the traditional and literary. For Sinclair, this means recounting growing up in a town amongst many Métis and First Nations community members. Over the course of 90-minutes, his stories will explore identity, poverty, family relationships, discrimination, racism - and the enduring spirit of the people. A Métis theatre artist, teacher and student of the nehiyawewin (Cree) and Michif languages, Sinclair is currently based on a ranch near Meadow Lake in Northwest Saskatchewan. His company, or more accurately, artistic entity, miyoteh performance, develops and produces pieces based on his work with elders and the nehiyawewin language, and also fosters artistic collaborations with diverse communities. Recently, Sinclair worked at SUNTEP Saskatoon in a student support role, and is now focusing on finding ways to share Métis stories, both contemporary and traditional, with the local, national and international communities. Sinclair is performing this one-night-only show between multiple performances at the biennial Montréal Storytelling Festival , which is also running this month, and further highlights the recent resurgence of the popularity of the art of storytelling.
