Celebrating Culture and Resilience through Art, Music, and Tradition

OTTAWA, ON – Aug 6, 2023 – Today, the Capital Ukrainian Festival announced its 2023 summer festival event lineup. Unfolding over the weekend of August 19 and 20, the festival invites the public to an immersive journey through art, music, and Ukrainian tradition.

On Saturday, August 19, the festival kicks off with a Korchma, a lively Ukrainian Pub Night at 1000 Byron Avenue. Attendees can soak in the vibrant atmosphere, featuring electrifying live performances by JV and Zirka. Food and beverages will also be available for purchase. Note that this is a 19+ event. Tickets can be purchased via Eventbrite.

On Sunday, August 20, the festival brings back the popular Yarmarok (marketplace) at Lansdowne Park. The Yarmarok will occupy the East Court, transforming it into a colourful and bustling, traditional Ukrainian marketplace. Here, attendees can explore a vast range of items reflecting Ukrainian art and culture, savour traditional Ukrainian food, and enjoy live performances. Due to last year’s tremendous success, this year’s Yarmarok will be expanded to accommodate more vendors and performers. This event is free to the public.

The Festival’s cornerstone event is the Art Exhibit: Scheduled over August 19 and 20, this evocative art installation of wartorn doors from Ukraine, on display at the Horticultural Building at Lansdowne Park, portrays the experiences of millions of Ukrainians displaced by war. Complementing the exhibit of ravaged doors, professional acclaimed Ukrainian artists, new to Ottawa, will stage performances that will enrich the narrative and craft an unforgettable cultural experience. This is a pay-what-you-can event.
