Young Jazz Musicians from across Canada Gather in Ottawa for the TD Jazz Youth Summit!

Ottawa (Wednesday, June 30, 2010) – Seventeen young finalists from across Canada have been selected to participate in the 6th annual TD Jazz Youth Summit in the Nation’s Capital, an event organized by the TD Ottawa International Jazz Festival in partnership with the National Capital Commission (NCC). These finalists were chosen based on their enormous talent and their love of music- jazz in particular.

This remarkable experience will culminate in a unique once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform on the Main Stage in two performances: Performing on July 1st provides a memorable opportunity to celebrate Canada Day right in the heart of the Nation’s Capital. On Saturday, July 3rd they will perform again on the Main Stage where the players will perform the Galaxie Rising Stars concert. Three lucky participants will then win cash prizes from Galaxie based on a juried panel.

The artists coming together to display their talent include: on sax, Julian Nalli (BC), Julian Selody (Ottawa), Phil Parry (Ottawa), Sandra-Mae Luykx (BC), and Zach Mills (BC) will blow the audience away with their smooth sounds, while Ben Promane (ON), Tara Kannangara (BC), Michael Whyte (ALT), and Caroline Johnson (QC) on the powerful trumpet. Andrew Jackson (NS), Emily Ferrell (ON), Anders Azzopardi (ON), and Felix Del Tredici (QC) groove on the trombone, and Steven Bilodeau (Ottawa) strums the guitar while Matthew Fong (ON) plucks the strings on his bass, Joel Visentin (MAN) piano, and Simon Miminis (NL) on the drums.

Throughout the Festival, they have and will continue to participate in jazz intensive workshops overseen by Music Director Jim Lewis, who has invited visiting Festival performers to conduct up-close-and-personal workshops. The final workshop will take place on Friday, July 2 at 12:30 – 2pm with Frank Lozano.

While in Ottawa the NCC will take the participants on a personalized tour of Ottawa, highlighted by a tour of the Peace Tower Carillon.

TD Jazz Youth Summit @ Ottawa Int’l Jazz Festival – Call for Applications

TD Jazz Youth Summit 

For the 6th consecutive year, the TD Ottawa International Jazz Festival is pleased to invite young jazz musicians between the ages of 17 and 22 to participate in a jazz intensive workshop during the 2010 Festival from June 24 to July 4. The results from the week long summit will be showcased during a special Canada Day presentation on July 1, and again on July 4 on the Festival’s Main Stage in Confederation Park. All eligible young jazz musicians may apply for this exciting musical adventure by March 30th, 2010.

Jim Lewis, the director of this intensive summit, is a renowned jazz professor at Humber College and the University of Toronto. He will select 15 – 20 young musicians from across Canada to participate in this event, consisting of daily 4-hour work sessions, visits from Festival headliners, and other workshop guests.

All Summit participants will receive:

  • all access pass to all concerts during the 11-day TD Ottawa International Jazz Festival
  • all travel and accommodation expenses for out of town participants (Summit participants are responsible for their own food and beverages)
  • a guided tour of Ottawa provided by the National Capital Commission
  • eligibility to be selected for a $2,000 scholarship donated by the Festival, and a $1,000 scholarship donated by Harvey Glatt through Rogers
