Young or old, fast or slow, long or short: Start to finish
During Ottawa Race Weekend, about 39,000 athletes will hit the ground running.
Three thousand will take on the 2K, others will tackle many, many more.
Some are in it to win, others simply to finish. Some run alone, others move in packs.

The Citizen is behind you from start to finish
By Gerry Nott, The Ottawa Citizen
Citizen Editor-in-Chief Gerry Nott: Why I run: I run to mostly to stay fit, but also because of how good it feels when I stop. Alert, sharp, refreshed and challenged. What keeps me moving: Excellent music, and the right route that ensures enjoyable scenery or the occasional surprise. Guilt works too, running is a perfect antidote for indulgence. Where I’m headed next: Almost assuredly, for a cold beer. After that, the Do It For Dad 10K in June.

Life has been hectic, so today’s blog is going to be the handout I gave my clinic on Friday. Hope you enjoy the advice!
The week before your race is important. You are officially tapering, which means you are cutting back on your running (and preferably cutting your strength training) so that your body can recover and heal from your training. This will allow you to get to the start line completely rested and in the best possible shape. But, there are some other things you need to do this week to ensure a smooth, memorable race:

Here’s your guide to some holiday fun
By Citizen files from Tony Spears, Kristy Nease, Katie Stewart and Bruce Deachman, The Ottawa Citizen
Our traditional observance of Victoria Day (the Queen’s official birthday) has given Canadians the perfect spot on the calendar to unofficially kick off summer. Bedding plants go in the frost-free ground. Cottages are opened and the patio furniture is hosed down. If you need a break from all that work, there’s plenty to do in the capital. The fabulous new incarnation of the Museum of Nature opens, with a packed schedule of special events. It’s also the final weekend to enjoy the Tulip Festival as it wraps up with a Prince Edward Island kitchen party. Another sure sign of the May long weekend is the launch of Sunday Bikedays, when the barriers go up to keep four-wheeled vehicles off the parkways, at least for a few hours.

Ottawa festivals continue celebrating good times
Ottawa Business Journal, Krystle Chow
The festival’s relative strength is reflected in other events across the city, says Ottawa Festivals executive director Barbara Stacey. Although there are currently no concrete statistics for local festivals and special events, she says she hasn’t seen any large-scale downsizing among her organization’s 51 members.
“Our members are run very well, they’re very good business models for success,” says Ms. Stacey.
She speculates that recent increases in support from all three levels of government may have played a role in helping local festivals attract and maintain corporate sponsors, since government funding typically equates to increased visibility and an indication that the event is viable.
But even without government funding and with no title sponsor, the Ottawa Race Weekend is an example of the health of the local festival industry.

Tony Graham Automotive to Match Ottawa Run Funds Raised for Cancer Research
They have proudly served the Ottawa area for the past 40 years and the Tony Graham Automotive Group has announced that its dedication to this community would extend well beyond their loyal customer base.
Participants join the MDS Nordion Run For a Reason Challenge and raise funds for The Ottawa Hospital – the official local charity of Ottawa Race Weekend (May 29-30). Every dollar raised in support of cancer research leading up to Ottawa Race Weekend will trigger a $1 donation from the Tony Graham Automotive Group – up to a maximum of $200,000. One of the researchers who will benefit from this generosity is Dr. John Bell, who is currently studying viruses that can kill cancer cells.
The funds raised by the community and donated by the Tony Graham Automotive Group will support the creation of a Centre for Innovative Cancer Research at The Ottawa Hospital General Campus where Dr. Bell, and many other researchers, will work to discover new and more effective ways to treat cancer.
