Tea party brings royal wedding style to Ottawa

A high tea and fashion show at the Museum of Nature tomorrow will give Ottawans who weren’t invited to the royal wedding a chance to enjoy some of its perks.

Formal attire worthy of the upcoming royal wedding, supplied by the St. Laurent Centre, will be modelled in a show presided over by Canadian fashionista Jeanne Beker.

Rather than a typical runway show the models will walk about the guests and be able to answer questions about the pieces.

“It’s great to combine fashion, fun and fundraising. With the royal wedding coming, it’s a great opportunity to host an afternoon tea,” said Bernice Rachkowski, marketing director for the St. Laurent Centre.

The event will be hosted by the CTV’s Carol Ann Meehan and adding to the pomp and circumstance of the occasion will be an appearance by the Governor-General’s foot guards.

The Royal ParTea is a fundraiser for the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.

Tickets are available at www.ottawacancer.ca.

Our traditional observance of Victoria Day (the Queen’s official birthday) has given Canadians the perfect spot on the calendar to unofficially kick off summer. Bedding plants go in the frost-free ground. Cottages are opened and the patio furniture is hosed down. If you need a break from all that work, there’s plenty to do in the capital. The fabulous new incarnation of the Museum of Nature opens, with a packed schedule of special events. It’s also the final weekend to enjoy the Tulip Festival as it wraps up with a Prince Edward Island kitchen party. Another sure sign of the May long weekend is the launch of Sunday Bikedays, when the barriers go up to keep four-wheeled vehicles off the parkways, at least for a few hours.

LOOKAHEAD 2010: A busy year for tourist industry

Jim Donnelly, Ottawa Business Journal

The head of Ottawa’s tourism authority is “cautiously optimistic” about this year’s upcoming tourist season, adding that any recuperation in his industry would be tied to an overall recovery in the economy.

“It would seem as if there has been a bit of growth in consumer confidence (lately), there’s been a couple months of growth in the economy,” said Ottawa Tourism president and CEO Noel Buckley. “And tourism, like everything, is afffected by macroeconomic conditions.

As far as the upcoming year is concerned, Mr. Buckley said a host of catalysts will work in the National Capital Region’s favour including the opening of Calypso Waterpark, the re-opening of a newly renovated Museum of Nature in late May and continued momentum from the region’s festivals and one-off yearly events such as the Canadian Tulip Festival, Ottawa Race Weekend and Bluesfest.

“I think those all bode well for 2010,” he said.
