OTTAWA — In the last month, Ottawa singer Kellylee Evans sang for crowds big and small, in venues near and far.

An indefatigable road warrior, Evans, who won a Juno Award this year for her most recent CD, Nina, performed for Canadian athletes in Guadalajara, Mexico as part of the Para Pan Am Games, revellers in Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square, jazz buffs at Birdland in New York and music-lovers at a Perth house concert.

Evans, who performs in Ottawa Thursday at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival’s annual fundraiser, discusses her travels, their impact on her family, and the live show that most recently knocked her out.

Tell me about your far-flung shows in the last month. What were those experiences like?

This last little bit has been just wake up and go wherever my calendar says to go. I really haven’t had a chance to process all of it. I love it though. I love being busy doing something I love. The trip to New York was wonderful. I had an opportunity to visit with friends and perform a couple of times. Both occasions were with the Sultans of String, who had gigs in the area and invited me to join them to promote our respective music to a new audience. We performed at a little venue called the Living Room and then moved to Birdland in the Times Square area. I know I say this a lot, but I really had a wonderful time.

Funding cut to Canada Day jazz programming

Joe Lofaro, Metro Ottawa

Organizers of the TD Ottawa Jazz Festival are looking for new sponsors for their 2012 Canada Day programming after the National Capital Commission (NCC) said it’s pulling its funding.

Funding from a second sponsor, Galaxie, is also up in the air according to the festival’s executive producer, Catherine O’Grady.

The NCC has partnered with the festival since 2005 to provide funding so that it could offer free jazz programming and a Jazz Youth Summit on Canada Day.

Last year, the NCC gave the festival $45,000 and $60,000 the year before. Next year, all funding will be withdrawn.

Bluesfest preview: Bootsy Collins keeps the funk alive

June 29, 2011 · Filed Under Festival News, News · Comment

Bootsy Collins plays Bluesfest Tuesday, July 5 at 9:30 p.m. on the Hard Rock Café Stage

CHICAGO — It’d be audacious coming from just anybody else, but William “Bootsy” Collins named his new album Tha Funk Capital of the World (Mascot) knowing full well he could back up the claim. Everyone from Snoop Dogg and Chuck D to Bobby Womack and his old mentor George Clinton stop in for a cameo, and actor Samuel Jackson nearly steals the show with a terrific rap about his young life as one of the boys in the ’hood. The foundation for it all is Collins’ rubbery, still-futuristic bass playing, and no matter what the style — jazz, psychedelia, bedroom ballads — the groove is always there.

“It wasn’t about black, white, green grass, bluegrass, it was all just music to me,” says Collins. “All music had a certain effect on me and I appreciated all of it. Funk is on the ‘one’ and music is all one, not to be separated. It doesn’t need a name. The key question is, ‘How does it make you feel?’ ”

Majestic Salif Keita brings passionate vocals to Ottawa this April

March 21, 2011 · Filed Under Blog, Festivals and Events · Comment

Ottawa (Monday, March 21, 2011) – International afro singer-songwriter sensation, renowned for his unforgettable live performances, soaring vocals and emotionally-fueled songs, Mali’s Salif Keita will perform again in Ottawa on Tuesday, April 12, 2011, 8pm at Dominion-Chalmers United Church, 355 Cooper Street (corner Cooper and O’Connor), presented by the Ottawa Jazz Festival. In his last sold-out Festival appearance in 2008 the Ottawa Citizen wrote, “… the whole concert was a happy event. Salif’s voice – it’s been called ‘majestic’ – moves effortlessly from guttural to pure, high and plaintive.”

Salif Keita has faced and conquered many challenges in his life. Born with albinism – a sign of extreme bad luck in Mandinka culture – into the royal family that descended from the founder of Mali, Keita was ostracized by his family. He left home as a teenager to create a new life for himself as a musician, a profession forbidden to the royal caste.

Exposed to and influenced by the first electrification of Mandingo music and the integration of Afro-Cuban influences, he performed with well-known Mali bands. He fled the political unrest in his homeland in the mid-1970s and performed in the Ivory Coast. In 1984 he moved to Paris to launch a successful solo career.

With help from Carlos Santana, Wayne Shorter and a number of carefully picked musicians from Mali and France, and after his first album Amen was produced Salif became the first African band leader to win a GRAMMY nomination. Although Salif Keita now tours internationally extensively, and is based in Paris much of the year, he now also resides in Mali. He tours with a mixed Malian/American 11 piece ensemble including singers, drums, percussion, bass, guitar and keyboards.

Reserved tickets are $45. General admission is $37 and Student prices (11 to 25 years, with valid student ID) are $22 (HST included). Tickets are on sale at the Ottawa Jazz Festival office: 294 Albert, Suite 602, 613-241-2633 or through our website at ottawajazzfestival.com; Compact Music (2 locations); CD Warehouse (all 3 locations) and Ottawa Festivals – 47 William St. in the Byward Market.

Peter Hum, Ottawa Citizen

It’s around this time of year that I and other jazz fans are itching to find out who the TD Ottawa International Jazz Festival will bring to town this summer.

Not that the event wants us to know.

While the lineup has almost certainly been determined for the event’s 31st annual edition, which runs from June 23 to July 3, jazz festival folks are keeping their lips sealed until their April 13 launch.

All that jazz supports … more jazz

The best place to get hip to Ottawa’s jazz scene Thursday was at the Arts Court, where the infectious sound of live jazz had you tapping your toes and swaying your head faster than you could say, “I’m really diggin’ this, daddy-o.”

One hundred or so jazz artists and aficionados spent the evening enjoying the music and mingling at a reception catered by Thyme & Again, all in support of JazzWorks’ summer jazz workshop.
