Some of the star names are enough to make a classical music lover’s mouth water: In 2011, Ottawa-area music buffs will be able to hear performances by conductor Gustavo Dudamel, pianists Angela Hewitt (twice) Janina Fialkowska (twice), violinist James Ehnes and the Orchestre National de France.

And those are just some highlights of performances that we know about. Programming is still to be unveiled for Julian Armour’s Music and Beyond Festival (July 7 to 17) and the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival (July 23 to Aug. 6.) We also don’t know yet what the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Ottawa Symphony or Opera Lyra Ottawa will offer in the fall.

In the meantime, here are a few promising performances scheduled for the first part of the year:

Jan. 9: Dudamel comes to the megaplex: The brilliant young Venezuelan maestro, director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since fall 2009, is in huge demand as a guest conductor. He appeared with the NACO in 2007, but with his busy schedule, is unlikely to be back to Ottawa often. So fans of Dudamel will be excited that the L.A. orchestra, in a page from the Metropolitan Opera’s successful satellite transmissions, plans to present three of this season’s concerts live by satellite from Walt Disney Concert Hall to movie theatres across North America. The series will include interviews with the conductor and musicians and footage of rehearsals. The series opens Jan. 9 at 5 p.m. with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, Bernstein’s Symphony No. 1 and American composer John Adams’ Slonimsky’s Earbox. Other concerts are March 13 (all-Tchaikovsky) and June 5 (all-Brahms). Ottawa-area cinemas presenting the concerts are SilverCity, Coliseum and Gatineau’s StarCité (www.cineplex.com).

Communities that seek to host major sporting events just to make money are missing the point, the chief organizer of this year’s Winter Olympics said Thursday.

Not once did he mention economic impact, hotel room nights, multiplier effects or any of the other typical buzzwords surrounding big events.

The economics weren’t neglected, of course. Furlong said in an interview that the Games broke even and left a legacy of many new roads and buildings, designed for adaptive reuse once the athletes were gone.

The Games left Vancouver with a new infrastructure and a better attitude. “The city is smiling,” Furlong said.

Festivals & events industry professionals exude two very notable qualities – passion & commitment. The Festival and Events Ontario (FEO) Awards Program is created to give recognition to the countless hours spent on creating world-class festivals/events here in Ontario.

January 8th, 2010, is the deadline for applications. That means there are only two weeks left to get them into the FEO office. This is an opportunity you do not want to miss!

Past recipients will tell you that being a Top 100 Festival has helped in building community spirit and support. They will also share with you that being a Top 100 festival is a strong marketing tool and can be used when generating sponsorship, looking for media support, or filling out grant applications.

Our Achievement Awards are dedicated to featuring special qualities and/or components of a festival or event. Whether it is an interactive virtual campaign, or a go-green idea, we want to see what makes your festival stand out. Every festival has something that makes them distinct from any other festival. Show us what makes yours unique.

As an added bonus, if you are a FEO Top 100 or Achievement Award recipient, your festival/event will be highlighted in our annual guide.

Applications can be found using the links below, or on our website at www.festivalsandeventsontario.ca. Hope to see your applications soon!
