NCC’S FIRST ANNUAL ENVIRONMENT REPORT: BUILDING A GREENER CAPITAL

August 17, 2010 · Filed Under Festival News, News · Comment

The National Capital Commission’s (NCC) 2009-2010 Environment Report is now available on the NCC’s website. This report provides an account on the NCC’s environmental management approach and indicates progress toward meeting its environmental objectives.

This report was approved by the NCC’s Board of Directors at its last public meeting. Environmental management and practices at the NCC are guided by its environmental strategy, Building a Greener Capital, which was launched on June 4, 2009.

“The NCC’s Environment Report demonstrates our ongoing commitment to making measurable environmental progress and leading the way to building a greener capital,” said Marie Lemay, Chief Executive Officer of the NCC. “It also underlines the NCC’s attention to the careful management of day-to-day environmental issues by staff from across the organization.”

The NCC is proud of the work accomplished since the launch of its environmental strategy. The initial emphasis has been on establishing solid benchmarks against which to measure future progress, taking action on environmental priorities and continuing to ensure ongoing alignment with broader government regulatory requirements.

The public can view the 2009-2010 Environment Report and several interesting feature stories by visiting www.canadascapital.gc.ca/enviro/2009-2010.

For more information on the NCC’s Environmental Strategy, the public may contact the NCC at 613-239-5000, 1-800-465-1867, 613-239-5090 (TTY), or 1-866-661-¬3530 (toll-free TTY), or visit the NCC’s website at www.canadascapital.gc.ca/greencapital.

Ottawa Folk Festival Joins Forces with the Museum of Civilization for Unplugged Earth Day Celebration, April 22

April 21, 2010 · Filed Under Festival News, News · Comment

The Ottawa Folk Festival and the Canadian Museum of Civilization have teamed up to host a candlelit, acoustic Earth Day Celebration at the Museum of Civilization on April 22.

Celebrating Earth day in true eco-friendly fashion, the event will be au natural. Lighting will be provided by candle as well as energy efficient LED bulbs. Entertainment will be acoustic, and refreshments will be low-impact and locally grown. The evenings’ festivities will include intimate, “unplugged” performances from popular local artists Ana Miura with Fred Guignion, Julien Lelièvre, Jill Zmud, Michel Sauvé, and Louis-Philippe Robillard, and awesome eco-chic DIY crafts.

The Ottawa Folk Festival’s participation in the Earth Day event is a natural fit for the green-inspired Festival, the first of the Ottawa festivals to ditch wasteful plastic water bottles for lower-impact public water. The public water initiative in partnership with CUPE, CUPE 503, Ottawa Riverkeepers and Council of Canadians, had water supplied by on-site Hydration Stations which were tapped into Ottawa’s public water, an effort that had a substantially positive effect on the eco-footprint of the festival.

“The festival’s water-bottle ban was also considered a success. Stainless-steel bottles were widely available, and close to 1,000 gallons of water were dispensed at the so-called hydration stations. According to water-station attendants, more than 7,000 plastic bottles were diverted from landfill sites.” – The Ottawa Citizen

The festival also was able to purchase reusable plates, bowls, cups and cutlery to serve the 600+ volunteers as well as the public throughout the festival weekend; made possible by the TD Friends of the Environment Fund.

This year’s festival will see the continuation of the bottle-free initiative and its resourceful, impact-reducing results.

With free admission to the Earth Day celebration, participants can enjoy the cozy atmosphere and music performances while taking part in eco-friendly arts and crafts with all supplies provided. Locally produced refreshments can be purchased from the cash bar.

The Earth Day Celebration will take place at the Ottawa Museum of Civilization in the Grand Hall and Riverview Lobby at Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 7pm. Admission, musical performances, and eco-crafts are free.

NCC BEGINS DEVELOPMENT OF GREEN TRANSPORTATION PLAN

November 6, 2009 · Filed Under Festival News, News · Comment

The National Capital Commission (NCC) is pleased to announce that it has begun the process of developing the Green Transportation Plan for Gatineau Park. The Plan, which will be developed in consultation with the firm AECOM-Tecsult, will assess the environmental impact of traffic on Gatineau Park and propose measures to reduce the impact, while allowing Park users to pursue recreational activities that respect the environment.

“The NCC wants to find sustainable solutions that will allow Park users, whether motorists, cyclists or pedestrians, to travel to and within Gatineau Park, while preserving the integrity of the Park,” said Marie Lemay, Chief Executive Officer of the NCC. “I invite the public and interest groups to share their comments and experiences related to travelling in Gatineau Park, and to send us their suggestions.”

The development of the Green Transportation Plan will include three phases. Phase 1 will begin with an assessment to evaluate the current situation and impact of traffic, establish projected trends in terms of traffic numbers and identify transportation-related issues. Phase 2 will develop one or more options for travel to and within the Park. Phase 3 will select the preferred option for travel to and in the Park. The Phase 1 assessment is now under way, and will conclude in spring 2010. It is expected that the final report for the Plan will be tabled in spring 2011.

With the Plan in place, the NCC will be able to prepare an action plan to implement concrete measures developed in collaboration with municipal and regional partners and with public support, as the public is being asked to participate in consultations throughout the entire process. The Plan will also establish budgetary needs, as well as a schedule for implementation over the short, medium and long term.

For the first phase in developing the Green Transportation Plan, the NCC is inviting the public and interest groups to visit its website at www.canadascapital.gc.ca and participate in an online consultation by responding to a survey. The aim is to define the key issues related to Park access and travel to and within the Park. The NCC would like to obtain suggestions from the public and interest groups regarding sustainable solutions that could be considered. The NCC is collecting the public’s comments and suggestions until January 15, 2010.

A second public consultation, expected to take place in spring 2010, will summarize the key issues and problems, as well as potential solutions. The third consultation, planned for winter 2011, will present the various proposed options for action.

Gatineau Park Winter Trails Open House

As part of the Gatineau Park winter trails open house, the public and interest groups can find out about new elements of the winter trails program and share their comments with the Gatineau Park management team. The open house takes place on Saturday, November 14, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gatineau Park Visitor Centre located at 33 Scott Road, Chelsea, Quebec.

Designing the Entrances to Gatineau Park

The Gatineau Park Master Plan (2005) establishes a hierarchy of visitor reception areas for more than 10 entrances to the Park. A study currently under way aims to establish design principles for each type of entrance, as well as the level of service offered at each entrance.

For those who are interested, an exhibit at the Gatineau Park Visitor Centre, which is also posted on the NCC’s website, provides details about the study. This information will be available until November 20, 2009. In addition, experts will be available to answer your questions at the Gatineau Park annual open house on November 14, 2009.

The public and interest groups can submit their comments via a survey, also available at the Visitor Centre and on the NCC’s website, until November 20, 2009.

For more information, please call the NCC at 613-239-5000, 1 800-465-1867 (toll-free), 613-239-5090 (TTY) or 1-866-661-3530 (toll-free TTY), or visit the NCC’s website at www.canadascapital.gc.ca.

Great success for a frugal folkfest: Rookie emcee and new director bring in lots of creative talent

August 24, 2009 · Filed Under Festivals in the News, News · Comment

Lynn Saxberg, The Ottawa Citizen

Bruce Cockburn, Joel Plaskett and Steven Page, three of the Ottawa Folk Festival’s marquee performers, shared a tiny outdoor stage with Ottawa singer-songwriter Ana Miura on Sunday afternoon.

Under blues skies, a crowd of about 1,000 sprawled out on the grassy riverside to see Cockburn, a Canadian folk legend and Ottawa native, trade songs with Miura and singer-songwriters Page and Plaskett. The three are musical representatives of a generation of Canadians who grew up with Cockburn’s music.

The session was titled Road Songs and each artist plucked, from his or her repertoire, a song about travelling, revealing various viewpoints. One of Cockburn’s contributions was a powerful version of Mines of Mozambique, based on a trip he took to the war-torn country, but then Page followed it up with Helicopters, which pokes fun at rock stars who visit war-torn countries. No malice was directed at Bruce, Page noted, the real problem is how the media simplifies the story.

Ottawa’s festivals getting greener

July 10, 2009 · Filed Under Festival News, News · Comment

Ecology Ottawa has released a report assessing the greening efforts of 15 local festivals. The report is based on Ecology Ottawa’s second annual survey of festivals, conducted this past spring. It explores the steps being taken by festivals in 2009 to reduce waste, cut emissions from transportation and energy use, provide sustainable food & beverage options, and limit consumption of water, paper, and other materials. The survey found that:

- Festivals are making the biggest efforts in waste reduction and recycling, followed by efforts in transportation and power management
- Three of the festivals are using electricity from certified green, renewable sources
- Two festivals have plans to buy carbon credits to offset their emissions
- On-site composting is featured at five of the festivals
- Eight festivals have agreed to join a committee with Ecology Ottawa to identify and implement best practices for festival greening

The breadth of green practices reported this year, as well as the much higher response rate compared to 2008, suggest that Ottawa’s festivals are taking environmental impacts more seriously and making improvements. Of course, there is much that can still be done, and Ecology Ottawa looks forward to working with a committee of festivals over the coming months to raise the bar on environmental standards at our city’s cultural events.

Festivals included in the report: BC Scene • Bon Appétit • Tulip Festival • Pride Week • Bluesfest • Magnetic North Theatre Festival • Dragon Boat Festival • Fringe Festival • Folk Festival • Chamber Music Festival • Irish Festival • Lumière Festival • Jazz Festival • Winterlude • Writers Festival

Survey puts environment on stage at summer festivals

Ecology Ottawa initiative asks organizers to consider how green they can beKate Jaimet, The Ottawa Citizen

So, just in time for the summer season, one local ecology group is releasing a survey of environmental initiatives at Ottawa festivals.

None of the fifteen festivals in the survey was shamed or blamed for being an environmental laggard. Festival organizers filled out the surveys themselves, and Ecology Ottawa did not independently verify the results.

“It’s not the most rigorous study, but it’s just to get people thinking about these things and to show other festivals what the real leader festivals are doing,” said Lori Waller, policy co-ordinator at Ecology Ottawa.

So who are the greenest of the green in Ottawa?

Rent your wheels in bike share trial

June 9, 2009 · Filed Under Blog, Community · Comment

There is an article in Metro Ottawa about a pilot program being undertaken by NCC, Gatineau and Ottawa to promote healthier/cleaner transportation by way of bike rental. It is an idea borrowed from other communities that have this infrastructure in-place, and festivals such as Rideau Canal Festival and Bluesfest already promote the use of bikes as a preferred source of transportation to get to their events. We’ll be interested in seeing the findings of the project this Fall.

TRACEY TONG | METRO OTTAWA

This summer, residents on both sides of the river will be able to take advantage of fast, healthy, eco-friendly transit – without owning their own bikes.

The National Capital Commission and the cities of Ottawa and Gatineau launched their Ottawa-Gatineau Bike Share Trial Run Monday. The program – which allows residents, workers and visitors in the National Capital Region to travel in a greener way – is also part of a feasibility study for a permanent bike share program.

“This is another positive step towards making the National Capital Region a more vibrant, livable and attractive place,” said NCC CEO Marie Lemay. “It lays the groundwork for a broader progressive initiative that encourages environmentally friendly travel.”
