Get ready for a more animated Rideau Canal shoreline.
The National Capital Commission rolled out five projects Thursday that it hopes will add some vibrancy and colour to the world’s largest skating rink and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The projects include a reading garden area, a mobile food truck offering gourmet foods, an urban beach and patio area, ice cream push carts and a one-day decorated bike ride that is vying for a Guinness world record.
The winning projects are among 42 submitted bids the NCC received last year after it asked for proposals on ways to liven up the Rideau Canal between the Government Conference Centre and Bronson Avenue. The projects will be rolled out over the summer months, and are part of a pilot project that will last for three years.
“It was very important for us to turn these projects around and have something this summer. We were very pleased with the response we got,” said Marie Lemay, CEO of the NCC, at a press conference Thursday near the Corktown Footbridge, where the projects were unveiled.
