Angel’ makes the NAC Gala sing
Caroline Phillips, The Ottawa Citizen
To answer a question posed by Sarah McLachlan in one of her famous love songs: Yes, Sarah, we will remember you – especially that heavenly voice of yours, heard at Saturday’s 15th annual NAC Gala.
The evening, which raised $621,000 for the National Arts Centre’s Youth and Education Trust, saw the Canadian singer, songwriter and musician team up with the NAC Orchestra to perform before a sold-out audience in Southam Hall.
Seen making their red-carpet arrivals were Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin, General Walt Natynczyk, Treasury Board president Tony Clement, U.S. Ambassador David Jacobson, CRTC chairman Konrad von Finckenstein and former cabinet minister Jim Prentice, now a senior executive with CIBC.
Honorary chairwoman Laureen Harper was seen in a floor-length, sleeveless Justina McCaffrey beaded white gown as she arrived with Julie Roberge, wife of Industry Minister Christian Paradis.
McLachlan can count Harper among her fans. “I think she has a voice like an angel,” the prime minister’s wife told Around Town at the pre-show cocktail reception.
Cuban singing legend Omara Portuondo heats up February in Ottawa
The Ottawa Jazz Festival presents Cuba’s sensational Omara Portuondo on Thursday, February 17, 2011, 8pm, at Dominion-Chalmers United Church, 355 Cooper Street, (corner Cooper and O’Connor). This is a rare opportunity to see this legendary Cuban superstar!
“Flowing in the present, but with deep roots in the past – the Cuban singer Omara Portuondo… is still impulsive onstage.” – New York Times
As a young artist, Omara toured extensively throughout the USA with her sister until the Revolution.
Under the Castro regime, she continued to tour internationally (except for America) and became known for her signature “boleros”. A living legend, Portuondo has been the subject of a documentary, Omara, which won an award at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival.
For more than sixty years Omara Portuondo has passionately exuded her country’s musical culture. The Cuban-born diva became synonymous with Cuban music after the instant success of the recording “The Buena Vista Social Club” and the band’s first international tour produced by Ry Cooder. Here she left her indelible mark alongside the legendary BVSC co-stars, Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo and Reuben Gonzalez.
Ottawa audiences will recall her two sell out performances with the Buena Vista Social Club and subsequently with the critically acclaimed Barbarito Torres. Omara is unquestionably the quintessential voice of the golden age of Cuban jazz.
Reserved tickets are $40. General admission is $32 and Student prices (11 to 25 years, with valid student ID) are $22 (HST included). Tickets are on sale at the Ottawa Jazz Festival office: 294 Albert, Suite 602, 613-241-2633 or through our website at ottawajazzfestival.com; Compact Music (2 locations); CD Warehouse (all 3 locations) and Ottawa Festivals – 47 William St. in the Byward Market.
The Story – one of the most exciting new groups to come out of the current New York jazz scene
“The Story’s debut CD is highly accomplished, richly detailed, thoroughly novel, and above all, blessed with as strong a band feeling as anything else I’ve heard so far this year.” – Peter Hum, Ottawa Citizen
Ottawa (Monday, January 10, 2011) – Bassist/composer Zack Lober will perform on Monday, January 24, 2011, 7:30pm at the National Arts Centre Fourth Stage in a concert presented by the Ottawa Jazz Festival. As an active band member and co-founder of The Story, “…an exciting new collaborative that is set to make its mark on the jazz world.” – All About Jazz., he will perform with some of the most exciting up and coming artists of the next generation in both jazz and rock.
The Story is an acoustic/electric group based in Brooklyn, NY featuring five unique and extraordinary musicians/composers. Each member came to New York from different parts of the world seeking to further develop his own musical voice: Lars Dietrich – alto saxophone (Amsterdam, Holland), Samir Zarif – tenor saxophone/electronics (Houston, U.S.), Greg Ritchie – drums (Saint John, Canada), John Escreet – piano (Doncaster, U.K.), Zack Lober – bass (Montreal, Canada).
They met at an impromptu jam session in a Harlem apartment five years ago. Their musical synergy and personal connection was immediate, prompting them to form a band together. With their unique approach to jazz, their reputation grew rapidly with both audiences and critics. They have since made numerous tours of Europe, Canada and the U.S. The Story has earned their place as one of the most exciting new groups to come out of the current New York jazz scene.
In November the band spent 10 days as Artists in Residence at the Guimaraes Jazz Festival in Portugal, headlined a concert, gave a series of workshops with students from the Porto Music Conservatory, and conducted a big band concert of their music.
The band will be touring in preparation for their second album to be recorded in New York upon their return from Canada in February 2011.

Bluesfest books two stops on Thorogood’s Canadian Tour: George Thorogood to play NAC and K-Rock Centre
Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest officials today confirmed that George Thorogood & The Destroyers will be performing at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa and at Kingston’s K-Rock Centre on May 29 and May 30, respectively. The concerts will be produced and presented by the Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest organization.
While many bands change sounds as the music scene evolves, George Thorogood & the Destroyers stay the course. They know who they are and they’re out to tell the world about it. Faithful to their blues roots, they’ve continued to play the rough and tough sounds that draw from the influences of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf. Nearly 30 years of performing have been marked with hits that include Bad To The Bone, Move It On Over, Willie And The Hand Jive, and his famous live renditions of Who Do You Love?, Johnny B. Goode, Reelin’ And Rockin’, and St. Louis Blues.
When the band rocks in concert, there’s a lively chemistry that’s instantly identifiable. If Thorogood’s signature guitar licks and trademark vocals seem infused with more passion than ever before, so too do the contributions of his stalwart rhythm section comprised of drummer Jeff Simon and bassist Bill Blough. Sax demon Buddy Leach blows like a hurricane, while guitarist Jim Suhler adds a crucial dynamic that reflects why he has become a permanent and valuable addition to the Destroyers.
Thankfully George Thorogood is still going strong and fans young and old, in both Ottawa and Kingston, will have a chance to catch that strength ‘live and in concert’ this spring.
Doors open at 7 p.m., opening act at 8 p.m., and Thorogood concert at 9 p.m. at both venues. Tickets are available beginning Friday, November 20 at Ticketmaster: www.ticketmaster.ca and at both the NAC and K-Rock Centre.

For the Fallen – Remembering our heritage with music for choir and brass
The Ottawa Chamber Music Society, in partnership with the Cantata Singers of Ottawa, present a poignant concert, For the Fallen, on Saturday, November 14, 8 PM at Dominion-Chalmers United Church.
The Cantata Singers of Ottawa and Capital BrassWorks join forces in a unique and powerful performance in honour of Canada’s military heroes, past and present, and in commemoration of Remembrance Day. This contemplative program expresses the deep-felt emotions triggered by moving moments in history.
The Cantata Singers of Ottawa is one of the foremost choirs in Eastern Ontario. Founded in 1964, the choir is now being directed by internationally renowned choral conductor Michael Zaugg who is taking the choir in new and exciting directions. The choir supports local and national composers by commissioning and performing their works. For this concert, Christopher Hossfeld will be the guest conductor.
Since its inaugural concert in June 1999, Capital BrassWorks has attracted enthusiastic audiences and seen its popularity grow by leaps and bounds. The group includes some of Canada’s finest brass players and percussionists drawn primarily from the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Guest artists from the Toronto and Montreal symphony orchestras have also taken part in concerts and recordings.
This commemorative concert will feature many moving and reflective pieces, including Rudolf Mauersberger’s motet of mourning, Wie liegt die Stadt so wüst, written after a massive air raid on February 13, 1945 destroyed the inner city of Dresden and killed some 25,000 people. The Kreuzkirche (Church of the Cross) remained standing, but its interior was gutted and the choir school destroyed. The motet was given its first performance in the gutted church in the same year. Also on the programme will be London Miniatures by Gordon Langford, O Nata Lux by Canadian composer Rob Teehan, an arrangement by Capital BrassWorks’ Angus Armstrong called Tommy’s Tunes inspired by Tommy Dorsey and the big bands, Hymn to the Fallen by John WiIliams from the movie Saving Private Ryan, and a WORLD PREMIERE performance of Shell Shocked by Michal Novotny, and others.
“Helping other organizations in the community achieve their goals while adding quality and programming diversity to our own concert offerings is a winning formula. Collaborating with the Cantata Singers and Capital BrassWorks gives us the opportunity to commemorate Remembrance Day on a grand scale,” says Artistic Director Roman Borys.

Chamberfest choices: 10 concerts you won’t want to miss
Richard Todd, The Ottawa Citizen
The changes are certainly no reason for music lovers to wring their hands. The festival’s loyal patrons will doubtless reap some benefits. For one thing, there will be fewer impossible choices to make.
In the past, some very good concerts were staged before tiny audiences because there were three or four other programs offered at the same time. On most evenings at this year’s festival, there will be two major concerts: one at Dominion-Chalmers Church at 7 p.m. and one at 8 p.m. at St. Brigid’s Centre for the Arts and Humanities (the former St. Patrick’s Church on St. Patrick Street), followed by a 10:30 p.m. concert at St. Brigid’s.
That makes for easier choices, and with one concert at 7 p.m. and one at 8 p.m., some patrons will undoubtedly try to sample a bit of both, as many have done in previous years with simultaneous concerts.

Duo together at last in stunning show
Pianist Jon Kimura Parker and violinist James Ehnes perform in one of finest concerts of the yearJohn Terauds, The Star
Serious music usually takes a summertime break in Toronto. But that didn’t stop an upstart downtown festival from giving us one of the finest concerts of the year Tuesday night.
It took 15 years for two Canadian stars – pianist Jon Kimura Parker and violinist James Ehnes – to co-ordinate their performing schedules. Given the spectacular results at the Carlu (the once-legendary Eaton Auditorium), one can only hope that this was the beginning of a long and frequent collaboration.
The duo opened the fourth annual Toronto Summer Music Academy & Festival, which runs to Aug. 13.
Parker and Ehnes repeat their stunning program at the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival on Saturday (details at chamberfest.com).
