Ottawa International Children’s Festival turns 25
Dan Lalande, Ottawa Performing Arts Examiner
Over the years, it is endured more bumps and scrapes than a toddler mastering a tricycle. But the Ottawa International Children’s Festival, skinned knees and all, is still standing – and standing tall, too, as turns 25.

Victoria Day Festival (May 8-24) Needs Weekend Volunteers
We need volunteers to help with our Victoria Day Festival. The Festival is in Queen Juliana Park near Carling and Preston. There will be a midway with rides, a stage with musical entertainment, and other attractions such as a petting zoo and face painting. Weekend afternoon attendance will mainly consist of families and children.
The festival runs from May 8 through May 24. We need volunteers on the weekends only (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Holiday Monday).
Possible duties include giving directions and offering assistance to patrons, promoting the festival at a booth in the Rideau Centre, handing out brochures, helping vendors and musicians with small tasks, and others.
We are also interested in finding a volunteer who knows how to engineer the sound for concerts.
Please let us know if you are interested, and how many hours you might be available.
Contact Chris at info@victoriadayfestival.com or by telephone at 613-567-4532.
Locals find family fun at Winterlude
TRACEY TONG
METRO OTTAWA
Winterlude may be known for bringing tens of thousands of people to Ottawa every year, but it also gives locals a chance to find entertainment right in their own backyard.
Family Day long weekend brought thousands of locals to Winterlude’s three sites, including the Rideau Canal Skateway, Confederation Park and Jacques-Cartier Park yesterday.
“Last year was a bad time for the economy,” said Ottawa resident Jennifer Parker. “I think a lot of families are really glad for quality activities they can take their kids to easily, that the kids will actually enjoy, and that won’t break the bank.
“Children shouldn’t have to miss out because the economy was in a slump.”
Parker and her husband brought their kids to Jacques-Cartier Park yesterday, where there were snow slides and ice fishing events.
Ottawa resident Becky Draper has enjoyed skating on the canal and Beavertails during Winterlude for years, but this year was extra special — it marked the first Winterlude for her year-old son.
City resident Jim Shivas never misses Winterlude. His favourite activities include skating on the canal and checking out the ice sculptures. The weather was perfect for winter fun this weekend, he said.
“As long as you can still see the stuff and go skating, that’s what matters to me,” he said. “I’d come out at -20.”
Bernadette Bailey and her daughter, Hannah, take advantage of Winterlude offerings by playing host to out-of-town friends and family every February.
While some people never miss Winterlude, other residents discovered it for the first time.

Winterlude organizers cancel Snowbowl concerts
CBC News
The outdoor Snowbowl concert series won’t be a part of Ottawa’s Winterlude festival this year, organizers say.
The National Capital Commission, which organizes the festival, said environmental concerns factored into the decision to cancel the concerts.
The NCC said the $400,000 that it spent every year on the outdoor concerts will be redistributed to other Winterlude events.

Join us in celebrating our second annual staged reading of the beloved classic Angel Square! Written by internationally acclaimed Ottawa author Brian Doyle and directed by acclaimed Ottawa writer-director Jan Irwin.
A seasonal favourite for the whole family, Angel Square is a celebration of the best the community has to offer – its writers, actors, musicians, an exciting director, and some of our most talented young actors all together for this spectacular family event – in support of the Children’s Festival.
The Story: It’s Christmas 1945 and 12-year-old Tommy lives in Ottawa’s tough, multi-ethnic neighborhood of Lowertown, where his best friend’s father has just been attacked. Adopting the role of “the Shadow,” his favourite radio persona, Tommy teams up with some friends to try and crack the case, leading them all around Ottawa and through Angel Square – a daily battleground for fights between Protestant, Catholic and Jewish kids. As we view the world through Tommy’s eyes, a small segment of Ottawa’s history is brought to life with a story about tolerance, acceptance and the difficulties of growing up.
