Report shows statistics of Ottawa’s artists
EMC Entertainment
More than one-third of Canada’s artists live in five of the largest cities, according to a report released today.
“It is critical that we create an environment here in Ottawa that keeps artists in the nation’s capital,” said Mayor Larry O’Brien. “We know that artists not only contribute to our quality of life, but also to the social and economic vitality of our city.”
“This report is invaluable as a benchmark for tracking the creative capacity of Ottawa’s neighbourhoods,” added Coun. Diane Deans, chair of the community and protective services committee. “We must work to ensure that Ottawa provides competitive per-capita support for arts and festivals as well as access to affordable studio space, inexpensive housing, galleries, rehearsal and performance spaces.

Magnetic North Compass Points seeks National Planning Committee
Compass Points is putting a call out to all conservatory, college, and university-level theatre students and recently graduated emerging artists. We are currently developing a National Planning Committee to help guide the 2010 edition of Compass Points Student & Emerging Artist Symposium. We are looking for dynamic students and emerging artists looking to share their ideas on current issues of concern to young artists seeking to navigate the gap between student life and professional practice. We are currently looking for one representative from each province and territory or region.
Held during the Magnetic North Theatre Festival, the Compass Points Symposium is a gathering of students and emerging artists from across the country which helps navigate the Festival and offers a firsthand introduction to the professional theatre industry. Organized by students and emerging artists from across the nation, Compass Points is a week-long event consisting of workshops, panel discussions, and social events which inspire participants to chart their own course in Canadian Theatre. We welcome students and artists from all theatre disciplines including but not limited to acting, directing, playwriting, design, technical production, and arts management.
For more information on how to join, please contact Liz Truchanowicz at compasspoints@magneticnorthfestival.ca.

Winterlude 2010: The Urban Cozy Project : February 2010
From Spins & Needles
Inspired by urban art and craft interventions around the world, this February 2010, Spins & Needles + the National Capital Commission (NCC) will transform the Ottawa-Gatineau winter landscape with a large-scale public urban art intervention. This intervention will take place during the annual Winterlude festival, Canada’s capital region winter celebration and one of the largest winter festivals in the world.
The Winterlude Urban Cozy Project, presented by Spins & Needles, will remix warmth, cold, art, craft, music and the city. We’re inviting artists and the public from near and far to create a warm and whimsical urban environment during Winterlude in Canada’s capital city by adding various warm coverings, or cozies, wrapped around trees, lampposts, and other urban elements on festival grounds. The intervention also seeks to play with traditional images and conceptions associated with a country known around the world for it’s cold weather climate.

The funding will lead to a series of travelling exhibits to showcase a collection that Moore said is as beautiful, rich and representative of Canadian heritage.
There will be upcoming exhibits at Winterlude in Ottawa, in Vancouver during the 2010 games and there will be an online component, which the minister said will make the collection accessible to more Canadians than a permanent gallery.
The federal government has been criticized by the visual arts community and supporters of the gallery such as Liberal Senator Jerry Grafstein for failing to create a gallery.

Lumiere Festival Lantern Making Workshops in Ottawa
Noticed this post on the spin off stuff blog. Looks like a lot of fun!
Ottawa’s Lumiere Festival is happening Saturday August 8th from 5-11 p.m. and festival organizers are looking for volunteers and offering classes on lantern making.
Classes are superaffordable and it’s a great way to spend an afternoon with friends or family. Plus your lantern will be featured at the festival! The great thing about the classes or volunteering is that afterwards you’ll have the skills to make lanterns for any event, like a birthday party, wedding, shower, BBQ or picnic.
