Province Encouraging Innovation and International Competitiveness in the Music Industry
Ontario is investing in the province’s music industry through more than 200 new grants that will help increase music production and attract new audiences to discover local artists.
Glenn Thibeault, MPP for Sudbury, was at the Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario today to make the announcement on behalf of Daiene Vernile, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport. This year, Le Carrefour francophone de Sudbury, Ontario’s oldest Franco-Ontarian cultural centre, is receiving support from the Ontario Music Fund to help expand and improve La Nuit émergente—a two-day festival that offers live music and theatrical showcases and performances.
Through the Ontario Music Fund, the province supports music companies and organizations to produce, distribute, present and promote Ontario-based music, to help them compete internationally. As a result, companies and organizations can invest in building the careers of their artists. Between 2013 and 2016, artists supported by the fund sold over 5.6 million recordings domestically and a further 7 million recordings internationally. Almost 4 million people have attended live music events supported by the fund, featuring performances by more than 4,000 Ontario artists.
Ontario’s plan to support care, create opportunity and make life more affordable during this period of rapid economic change includes free prescription drugs for everyone under 25, and 65 or over, through the biggest expansion of medicare in a generation, free tuition for hundreds of thousands of students, a higher minimum wage and better working conditions, and free preschool child care from 2 ½ to kindergarten.
