Second-generation blues artists bring it back

A common criticism of Bluesfest is that it’s no longer about the blues.
Mainstage headliners are generally chosen for their ability to draw an audience rather than their adherence to the genre that inspired organizers to create the festival in the first place. Crowded House, for example, started their deadline-pressing set last night with well-crafted, melodic pop rock, showing not a shred of the hard-done-by grit of blues.
We know Bluesfest has grown beyond the blues, but it’s worth being reminded that its roots are in the blues, an influence that was demonstrated at the Hard Rock stage last night.
