OTTAWA, ON – Marking the start of the 2011 Festival Season, Ottawa Festivals hosted its sixth annual Launch of the Festival Season at Ottawa’s City Hall on Wednesday, May 4, 2011. This year’s event celebrated not only the beginning of the festival season, but also a significant milestone for Ottawa Festivals – its 15th Anniversary.

“This year we wanted to celebrate the history of the organization and the industry,” Barbara Stacey, Executive Director of Ottawa Festivals, “There have been many significant accomplishments that deserve to be recognized and I think we achieved that; it was such a success.”

Ottawa Festivals has grown since it was initially established and has surpassed the original expectations of its founders. “Since it began, Ottawa Festivals has accomplished so much more in many ways,” says Mark Monahan, Executive and Artistic Director of Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest who was a founding member of Ottawa Festivals and its first president.

“It started out just producing an annual brochure that lists all the festivals,” continues Monahan, “Now it brings the community together, raises the profile of the industry and festivals, and offers the Job Creation Program that allows members to access resources and volunteers.”

Close to 300 guests attended this year’s Launch including representatives of Ottawa’s festival and tourism industry; volunteers; City of Ottawa council members and staff; and 15 Launch of the Festival Season Contest finalists.

To open the event, Ottawa Festivals debuted a special video that commemorated the organization’s 15 year history and featured comments from members of partner organizations and industry.

“We [City of Ottawa] are looking forward to another great season of festivals this year,” said Mayor Jim Watson in the Ottawa Festivals 15th Anniversary video, “Thank you for all of the great work you do, whether you’re an artist, an administrator or a volunteer. We appreciate the economic activity the festivals bring; the fun, the culture and the excitement.”

Pleased with the benefits of being a member of Ottawa Festivals, Michel Gauthier, President of the Rideau Canal Festival, relays his gratitude when he said, “it’s a pleasure to work with the Ottawa Festivals Network and it’s a pleasure to receive services from them as well.

“Who knew we would become this organization that’s supporting many, many festivals and helping to create Ottawa as a festival and event city.”

Mayor Jim Watson addressed the crowd and highlighted the importance of the festival industry for the local economy and tourism industry. The Mayor added how collaboration between Ottawa Festivals, its members and the City has been significant for the growth and success of the industry.

The importance of collaboration was echoed by John Brooman, President of Ottawa Festivals, as he spoke about Ottawa Festivals’ successful history and its role in sustaining a strong festival industry.

Stu Schwartz, aka Stuntman Stu from Majic 100FM, entertained the attendees as the emcee. Moving throughout the tables and engaging guests were a few of Ottawa’s local buskers, who included Nick Miller and Brian Wilson (the “Cow Guys”) and Elliot Smith, a magician. Jean Pigott Place was also decorated with creative balloon sculptures that were crafted by Brad Wood and a music performance by singer and songwriter Marc Charron added to the carnival atmosphere of the event.

To celebrate this year’s theme, Culinary Experiences, a variety of cultural foods were served by Dantessa Restaurant. In addition, four food vendors from the Ottawa region offered delicious dessert samples for attendees to try. Each vendor offered a unique dessert from Belgian waffles and specialty cookies to cheesecake and ice cream. The businesses’ presence at the launch helped boost their promotion as festival and community members became more aware of their speciality treats.

The winner of the Launch of the Festival Season Contest was drawn and the prize pack of passes to many Ottawa Festivals’ Member’s events was awarded to Julie Charron.

OTTAWA, (Ontario) – The first phase of Ottawa Festivals’ research project that began a year ago is complete. Individual festival reports were released on Friday, April 15, detailing the results of the 2010 industry-wide survey conducted at various festivals.

“It is exciting for Ottawa Festivals to have such a strong start with this research project,” says Barbara Stacey, Ottawa Festivals’ Executive Director.

“This is an area that hasn’t been addressed before in Ottawa and having firsthand information about visitor demographics, interests, and motivations is invaluable. There is more to the industry than economic impact, and our ability to identify the social and environmental aspects will be greatly beneficial to our members.”

With the help of 110 volunteers, Ottawa Festivals’ research team collected over 3,500 surveys over the course of the 2010 festival season. Volunteers spent a total of 500 hours surveying visitors at 17 different festivals, special events and fairs hosted within Canada’s Capital region.

“It was a great experience,” says one of the volunteers. “Being a part of the team and helping festivals in Ottawa with this industry-wide study has been great, and knowing that it will help the community makes it worthwhile.”

The data gathered from the survey is currently being analyzed by a team of researchers and will be published in a final report to be released in early summer of 2011.

“The individual reports are the first part of a final comprehensive report on the social impacts,” says Tamer Mansy, Ph.D., who led the Research Project, “The information in the final report will confirm our belief that Ottawa is a great city to live in and visit because of the wide range of festivals and events that take place here each year.”

Upon its completion, the research project will examine the social, economic and environmental impacts of festivals, special events and fairs in Canada’s Capital Region. This five year research project would not be possible without funding from the City of Ottawa, Employment Ontario, and the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

About Ottawa Festivals

OTTAWA — Each year as winter draws to a close, the festival community across the province eagerly awaits the announcement of the Top 100 Festivals and Events in Ontario list compiled by Festivals & Events Ontario (FEO) at their annual Awards Gala. This year five Ottawa area festivals were honoured — The Rideau Canal Festival, Canadian Tulip Festival, Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest, Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, TD Ottawa International Jazz Festival and Winterlude. The Top 100 Festivals and Events in Ontario designation is presented to a select few of more than 2,000 events that occur annually within the province.

Mark Monahan, Founder and Executive Director of the Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest, was inducted into the association’s Hall of Fame, an annual award which has been created to recognize and honour leaders in the Ontario festivals and events industry.

“This is a well-deserved honour,” says Barbara Stacey, Exectutive Director of Ottawa Festivals, a not-for-profit organization that represents festivals, special events and fairs that take place in Canada’s Capital Region, “Besides the incredible growth and success Mark has seen at Bluesfest, he is also a community champion and has been involved in a number of initiatives on behalf of the industry and the tourism sector, as well as programs such as Blues in the Schools and the She’s the One Emerging Female Artist Competition.”

Mosaika, the Sound and Light Show on Parliament Hill that is presented by the National Capital Commission (NCC) was singled out in the category for Best Poster and Best Promotional Campaign in FEO’s Achievement Awards which acknowledge individual festival and event excellence and best practices.

“We are very proud of the calibre of festivals and events presented in Canada’s Capital Region,” says Stacey, who was in attendance at the FEO Conference, “Ottawa is being recognized by more and more people as, Canada’s Festival Capital. It is because we are home to a number of world-class events such as the ones honoured by FEO; and having hundreds of festivals and events taking place through the year, there always seems to be something happening.”

The twelve festivals benefiting from this year’s funding are the Canadian Tulip Festival, Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest, Festival franco-ontarien, Music and Beyond, Tim Horton’s Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival, Ottawa Folk Festival, Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, Ottawa International Children’s Festival, Ottawa International Writers Festival, Rideau Canal Festival, Summer Solstice Aboriginal Arts Festival, and the TD Ottawa International Jazz Festival.

“It is very encouraging to see an increased commitment from the province,” says Barb Stacey, Executive Director of Ottawa Festivals, a not-for-profit organization that represents more than 50 not-for-profit festivals, special events and fairs that take place in Canada’s Capital Region, “There is no question that these events have tremendous socio-economic impact on the community by providing affordable access to cultural and community-based activities while also attracting more visitors. These events help showcase Ottawa’s identity while also creating significant economic impact that supports increased prosperity, jobs and opportunities for our community.”

Created to help festivals and events improve their programming and services to attract new audiences, increase visitor spending and create jobs; Celebrate Ontario is investing a total of $20-million in 230 events across the province.

OTTAWA, ON –The Ottawa Festivals announces $133,000 grant funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), a project developed to strengthen volunteerism in the festival and events sector to be carried-out over the next two years.

“The Ontario Trillium Foundation funding helps our festivals in Ottawa grow by reinforcing their capacity to hire and engage young volunteers who are an essential resource for festivals,” said the Honourable Madeleine Meilleur, MPP for Ottawa-Vanier. “Not only does this grant reinforce volunteer tradition among youth but it supports festivals which are important drivers of tourism and the economy in Ottawa.”

John Brooman, President of Ottawa Festivals and Executive Director of the Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival, accepted a plaque signifying the investment in the Ottawa community from OTF representative Bob Wilson. Michael Chan, Minister of Tourism and Culture, sent a congratulatory message that was read to the crowd of more than 300 festival organizers, volunteers and supporters.

“Without the number of incredible volunteers that step forward every year, most festivals would not happen. It’s as simple as that,” says Brooman. “We are extremely excited about the Ontario Trillium Foundation supporting this project so that, as an industry, we can help provide real meaningful experiences for those who want to commit their time to these community events. We are all better for it.”

Ottawa Festivals will undertake research to develop a better understanding of why people volunteer, and the expectations of those who do. The project will result in an online tool developed to match volunteers with opportunities; resources to help train volunteers; and best practices for engaging and retaining volunteers through improved communications strategies and more relevant opportunities.

Ottawa Festivals opens its doors to their new information and ticketing office, located at 47 William St. in the Byward Market, where Ottawa residents and visitors can get information and purchase tickets to all of Ottawa’s festivals, special events and fairs.

“For the first time in Ottawa, people are able to go to one place, find out what’s going on and purchase tickets to every event that is happening,” says John Brooman, Ottawa Festivals president and Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival executive director. “Having a centralized ticketing office has been talked about for a long time in Ottawa, and we are excited to finally see it come to fruition.”

The new office will serve as a ticket outlet for TicketMaster, Capital Tickets and TicketWeb. “In the future, we plan to add ticketing for other venues and attractions,” says Brooman.
This will allow people to purchase tickets to events, including tickets to Ottawa Senators games, events at the Scotiabank Place and the National Arts Centre.

“The Byward Market is convenient for Ottawa residents and is an ideal location to provide services to people visiting the city,” says Brooman. It averages 50,000 visitors per weekend during the summer months. “The new location will increase visibility,” he adds.

Tourists, festival patrons and event goers can learn about smaller events that may not have the same operating budget to reach a wider audience as some of the major events do. According to Ottawa Tourism and Convention Authority, local economic activity attributable for 21 of the festivals is almost $94-million.

“This is a great opportunity for visitors and residents to find out more information about Ottawa’s events,” says Ottawa Festivals Executive Director Barbara Stacey. “There are some very unique festivals and events going on in Ottawa that they may not be aware of, but with the new space, people will discover what Ottawa’s event industry has to offer.”
