Fellowship Band, Ninety Miles to open Jazzfest

Article by: Peter Hum, Ottawa Citizen

Brian Blade’s Fellowship Band and Ninety Miles – two groups with impeccable jazz credentials – have been added to the mainstage lineup of this year’s TD Ottawa International Jazz Festival.

Blade’s group, a quintet that melds the drummer’s interest in folk, roots and gospel music with unfettered and often epic jazz improvising, will be main headliner in Confederation Park on Friday, June 22. The group helped closed the festival in 2009. Last year, Blade returned to Ottawa on the event’s final night, drumming in his good friend Daniel Lanois’ roots rock band Black Dub.

Opening for Blade’s band will be the Cuban-inspired group Ninety Miles, which includes trumpeter Nicholas Payton, saxophonist David Sanchez and vibraphonist Stefon Harris, three jazz artists who over the years have each led groups at Confederation Park. The group takes its name from the distance between Havana and Miami.

Closing night at Fashion Week

If just one person stops wearing ball caps with unnecessarily baggy jeans, Ottawa Fashion Week will have been a success.

By any other measure it already has been.

Taking in the new trends, about 2,000 people ogled dozens of unique, Canadian-designed outfits at the Westin Hotel.

Although that number is a bit lower than last year — the price organizers paid for shifting the event from the bigger Convention Centre — spokeswoman Christine Achampong said the new intimacy has given the event more energy.

“It’s been amazing,” she said.

Nearly 20 designers showcased fall clothing featuring warm plums and browns to “evoke the season.”
